Motorcyclist Seriously Injured in Crash That Closed Down Intersection (Update)

A 55-year-old Oak Forest man was hospitalized in critical condition after a collision with an SUV Friday near the intersection of 143rd Street and John Humphrey Drive.

UPDATED: 3:21 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27

An accident between a motorcycle and a car that closed down the intersection of 143rd Street and John Humphrey Drive for a few hours early Friday evening left the motorcyclist seriously injured and hospitalized in critical condition, according to a police official.

A 55-year-old Oak Forest man was traveling on his motorcycle eastbound in the 9200 block of 143rd Street when a Lexus SUV pulled out in front of the cycle at around 3:30 p.m., said Orland Park Police Cmdr. John Keating said in an email Saturday.

The man was seriously injured and brought to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, Keating said in the email, adding that the Orland Park woman driving the SUV was not injured.

The police department's traffic unit is still investigating the crash, Keating wrote. Names were not being released at this time.

Readers living in the area near the intersection said their neighborhoods were blocked off for about three hours Friday, Oct. 26, because of the accident. At about 11 p.m. Friday, the motorcyclist's daughter-in-law posted this message on Orland Park Patch's Facebook page:

He is in the surgery/neuro intensive care unit. He's hanging on for his life right now. It's been over 6 hours and we are finally going to be able to get to see him. Please keep him in your prayers!

Patch will continue to update you as details become available.

THIS is why the Village must either add at least a yellow flashing caution light at the crest of the 143rd street hill & 92nd Court and/or monitor the SPEED of vehicles travelling on 143rd, especially eastbound. They barrel through there at 50+MPH regularly. Poor guy!

I live on the corner and saw it happen. I was the first one on the scene. I have been praying for him, his family, and the women who hit him. I also agree there should be a light of some sort.

Joe is my father, and he remains in critical condition at Christ Hospital. While we appreciate the outpouring of prayers, we kindly ask that they continue. We have watched his condition improve slightly over the past two days, but this is going to be a very long road to recovery. The trauma caused to his head is very extensive, and has effected multiple parts of the brain. He is still in a deep coma, and only time will tell how much of a recovery he will be able to make.
Whether you know him or not, please put my dad in your prayers and don't give up on him. He is a stubborn man, who doesn't know when to quit and doesn't know how to fail.

I arrived upon that horrible scene shortly after the accident happened and have been searching for news of your father's condition. I am so heartened to hear he is at Christ and is a fighter. Her certainly has my prayers as probably those of every person who saw the aftermath. God bless you all and give you the strength to face the coming months.

Not to be a Debbie downer, but I do hope that he was wearing a helmet when the accident occurred. If not, the brain injuries might have been lessened. This is a lesson to all motorcyclists. You may enjoy the feeling of the breeze thru your hair, but wear a helmet. It may just save your life.

Hey freddie, if you don't want to be "a Debbie downer" then don't. That's like saying "needless to say" and then saying it. Yes, everybody knows about motorcycles and helmets. I really doubt a helmet would have kept my brother's pelvic bone from breaking or stopped all the arteries and veins in that area from tearing. I doubt a helmet would have prevented 8+ of his ribs from breaking and puncturing both lungs and collapsing one. However, all the prayer from family, friends, friends of friends, all the people reading these posts and thousands more, are helping to keep my brother alive. So if you want to get on a soap box and make a speech, how about you stop being the type to blame the rape victim, and you start preaching "START SEEING MOTORCYCLES!" Or maybe even stuff like stop texting and driving, or pay attention to the task at hand while driving. When I was being raised, my father told each of his children that "when you get behind the wheel of a car, you are driving a 2 ton weapon." I do appreciate all the people here who are praying for my brother. I would even appreciate you, freddie, if you could get off your soap box long enough to say a prayer for Brother Joe!

I am sorry, but I have been preaching helmet safety for a while now. You see...my best friend, the best man at my wedding now resides in Resurrection cemetery because he felt that helmets were for sissys. He always said he "love the wind in his hair" and would never wear a helmet. Well..it cost him his life. If your brother wore a helmet...good for him. Yes, a helmet does not prevent broken hips, ribs and such, but it can save a life. All I read in the above was about Brain injuries. Thats what lead me to make my statement

I am sorry for your loss, and I respect your passion for wanting to save another from the same fate as your friend. However, it has been said that the woman who was driving the SUV did not see my brother. Therefore, my point is, instead of criticizing for a person's choice, maybe start preaching about the lackadaisical way that many people drive in today's world. And again, I started reading these posts and was happy to hear of still more people who are praying for my brother, but then encountered your post and got the impression you were blaming him. I get what you're saying, so please hear what I'm saying - stop driving in phone booths, pull to the side of the road to text, yell at your misbehaving kids when you reach your destination and please, "Start Seeing Motorcycles!" (Or pedestrians, or bicycles or the stopped car in front of you!) Thank you everyone for your prayers! Please, keep them coming.

Freddie, I understand your intentions here, but without being at the scene there isn't a way to know and authorities we've spoken with haven't said one way or the other. Best is not to assume. The brain can be hurt plenty even if one is wearing a helmet, and I know that from a friend who was in a motorcycle accident where a car driver wasn't paying attention, and he was wearing a helmet.

That said, I am very sorry for your loss. Any motorized vehicle for land, air and sea can become deadly if we're all not careful.

He's literally one of the most genuine men I have ever met. I cannot even believe something like this could happen to him. I only had the pleasure of meeting him a couple times but he left an impression. To John and joe, as well as the rest of his family and friends my prayers go out to you all
