Boys Swimming: Sandburg Cruises to Southwest Suburban Conference Championship
Matt Veldman and Trevor Winans each won two individual events as Sandburg won the Southwest Suburban Conference boys swimming championship on Saturday at Lockport.
Matt Veldman and Trevor Winans each won two individual events and led Sandburg to the Southwest Suburban Conference boys swimming championship on Saturday at Lockport.
Veldman won the 50 free (21.81) and the 100 butterfly (51.23). Winans swept to victories in the 200 free (1:46.31) and the 500 free (4:47.78). The two helped Sandburg won the conference team title with 331 points.
Lincoln-Way East finished second with 232, followed by Lockport 204, Homewood-Flossmoor 196, Lincoln-Way Central 188 and Joliet Township 105.
Sandburg's Stephen Zieler won the 100 back (53.83). He also was a part of three winning relay teams for the the Eagles.
Zieler teammed with Veldman, Michael O'Malley and David Apps for a winning time of 1:38.74 in the 200 medley relay. O'Malley, Zieler, Anthony Bonnar and Stan Grotkiewicz were clocked in 1:28.27 in the 200 free relay. Bonnar didn't know how to swim when he first joined the Eagles' swim team as a freshman.
Veldman, O'Malley, Zieler and Grotkiewicz teamed for a first-place finish in the 400 relay (3:11.43). Apps won the 200 I.M. (2:00.96). Grotkiewicz won the 100 free (48.63).
Sandburg also won the JV team title. The Eagles picked up individual first-place finishes from Zach Roper (200 free, 1:56.23), Kevin Tunney (200 I.M., 2:09.17), Taras Oleksyn (50 free, 23.77), Austin Corradino (100 fly, 56.88; 100 back, 59.03), Patrick Bieski (500 free, 5:02.80).
The Eagles also won JV titles in the 200 medley relay, 200 free relay and 400 free relay.
