Comings & Goings: Rue 21 to Open in Tinley Park

Rue 21, a national fashion retailer for young men and women, has signed a lease to open a new store in the Tinley Park Plaza near 159th Street and Harlem Avenue.
The 5,800-square-foot store will be between Walt’s Foods and Bath & Body Works in the plaza, Brixmor Property Group announced. Brixmor owns and manages the strip mall.
The store is expected to open in late summer or early fall. Rue 21 is based in Warrendale, Pa., and operates 770 stores in 46 states.
The lease is one of three the retailer signed last month with Brixmor.

Tinley to Expand Rec Center
Bids are due by 10 a.m. Friday for construction of a 30,000-square-foot addition to the center at 8125 W. 171st St., which opened a decade ago. The park board expects to award the contracts at its July 11 meeting.
The construction project is estimated to cost around a $4.5 million, $1 million of which will come from existing funds. The project should be under way this fall and completed by next year.
Plaques Plus in New Location
Plaques Plus, which specializes in sports memorabilia, has opened in its new location at Orland Square Mall in Orland Park. The store recently moved into its new digs on the upper level in the Sears Court, next to GNC.
Fox Head Opens
Fox Head Inc., which made its name with a worldwide brand of motocross apparel and has since branched out into other performance sports, is scheduled to open its only Chicago-area store today at Orland Square Mall. The company was started as Fox Racing in 1974 in Campbell, Calif.
A mall spokeswoman on Friday said she knew of no special events scheduled for today’s opening.
Toy Box Connection Seeks Sponsors
Orland Park-based Toy Box Connection, a nonprofit organization that connects children in need with the gift of a toy, will be hosting its third annual Charity Golf Outing at Silver Lake Country Club in Orland Park on Monday, July 30, and is looking for golfers and sponsors.
Golfers can register individually or as a foursome. Along with 18 holes of golf with a cart, the event will include a continental breakfast, lunch, beverages on the course, a steak dinner, raffle prizes and contests. Special pricing is available for groups signing up as a foursome.

Art Fair Registration Deadline Looms
Friday is the last day for artists and sponsors to register for the Orland Park Area Chamber of Commerce’s Fine Art Fair on July 21-22. Registration forms are available online at the Orland Park Chamber of Commerce. For information, call the chamber at 708-349-2972.
Tinley Park-Frankfort Rotary Give Scholarships
The Tinley Park-Frankfort Rotary Club handed out scholarships earlier this month to local students heading to college this fall. Students who received $1,000 scholarships were Andrew High School graduate Nicholas Lew, Lincoln-Way East High School graduate Julianne Sipos, Tinley Park High School graduate Rachel Gattone and Lincoln-Way North High School graduate Dena Waldier.
Lisa Hurdle, a graduate from Tinley Park High School, received a $500 scholarship for her community service efforts and fundraising for the school’s Interact Club, a Rotary sponsored service club.
Marathon Station Under Construction
Construction is under way on a Marathon gas station at 15301 S. Harlem Ave. in Orland Park. The station used to be a Speedway gas station and a Super America station before that. A media contact for Marathon said the station is independently owned and he did not have any information about when it would be opening.
