Names in the News: Lifesavers Aid Drowning Man at Lake Sedgewick

A man calling for help while in the water at Centennial Park was lucky a few brave people were there, heard his cries and pulled him out of the water Tuesday.

Albert Kulicz and Mackenzie Smith were not likely planning on jumping into the water Tuesday. Swimming also happens to be forbidden at Lake Sedgewick, but that didn’t stop a 33-year-old man of Tinley Park from getting into the deep waters. Authorities praised the quick efforts of Kulicz, 21, of Bridgeview, and Smith, 16, from Orland Park, for jumping into the water after hearing cries for help, pulling the man to land, and with the help of 16-year-old Andrea Dunn and 17-year-old Taylor Calzaretta, getting him on land as emergency personnel arrived on scene.

“I clearly believe if it wasn’t for their quick actions, this man surely would’ve drowned,” Orland Park Police Commander John Keating said Tuesday. “At great risk to their own safety, they acted appropriately, and without hesitation they jumped in and saved him. With their actions, they are definitely heroes as far as I’m concerned.”
