Police: Bomb Squad Determined Old Grenade Was a Dud
A man sorting through his deceased father’s property in Orland Park found a grenade, and then brought it to the Orland Park Police Department for disposal, where bomb squad technicians found the grenade was not functioning.
The Cook County Sheriff’s Police Bomb Squad was called out to the Orland Park Police Department Thursday, after a man brought in an old grenade that turned out to be a dud.
A man cleaning out his deceased father’s residence in Orland Park found the grenade, and brought it to the police department to turn in for disposal around 4:30 p.m., according to Orland Park Police Commander John Keating. A police supervisor then took the grenade out of the station to the parking lot, for the bomb squad to investigate, Keating said.
Bomb technicians determined the grenade was a “non-functioning military grenade, and they disposed of it” about an hour later, Keating said.
The police department’s front parking lot was blocked off for about an hour, and reopened once the area was secured, Keating said.
“Visitors were escorted into the police station through a rear entrance, and the station stayed open during the event,” Keating said.
The Orland Park Police Department does not recommend transporting any potentially explosive items under any circumstance, including if people are uncertain whether an item is real or not.
In the event a person does find such an item, the best course of action is to leave it alone, and call the authorities, Keating said.

A 'dud' is a real grenade that misfires.
A 'practice grenade' weighs as much as a real grenade, but is inert.
Because this is Patch, I'm left to guessing it was a practice grenade and that was too boring to lead with, so they twisted into unexploded ordinance for shock-value.

It wasn't specified whether it was practice or not though it was described specifically as a military grenade. Do with that what you will. Tell us more about how making assumptions are part of your high standards.

That's too bad you feel that way, "Cynthia." But I can see why you'd be protective over "Hendrick." You two have very, very similar email addresses. Must be a coincidence.
To be clear, every definition I have heard for a dud is an explosive that didn't work. Not working and non-functioning I'd say are similar descriptions. This story was published because a handful of people were curious why the police station's parking lot was cordoned off. Feel free to assume about my intentions as you like. Hopefully someone sees the irony there.

LOL, Ben. If you spent HALF as much time defending your articles in the comments sections as you do writing them, you'd be up for a Pulitzer.
