Police: Stalker Tried To Lure School Girls, Offered To Buy Milkshakes
Park Forest man used to baby sit one of the girls, police said. Wife told police he's not a child molester. Parents say it's not the first time he's driven through their neighborhood.
A Park Forest man tried to lure two girls into his car on March 16 near an Orland Park elementary school and promised to buy them milkshakes if they met him the next day, Orland Park police said.
Jim M. Shaver, 56, of the 00-100 block of Brookside, stopped two girls, ages 11 and 9, in the 15200 block of Orlan Brook Drive around 4 p.m. as they walked home from school, according to an Orland Park police report.
One of the girls told police Shaver used to baby sit her and that he tried to get her into his car by saying, “I have your keys you left at my house…come in so I can give them to you."
When she refused, Shaver tossed the keys out the window and advised both girls to meet him the next day at 3:30 p.m. so he could take them out for a “milkshake,” police said. The girls told police Shaver’s dashboard police radar detector then suddenly began beeping. Police showed up in time to see his red 2001 Kia speed off and, when flagged down, asked the girls what had happened.
The girls were able to catch the last four numbers on Shaver’s license plate and gave police a description of him which included a “long white beard.”
One of them also told police Shaver and his wife knew her mother, though they were no longer on speaking terms. That girl’s mother would later tell police Shaver once let her daughter and a friend put makeup on while he snapped photos. She also recalled a story in which her daughter spent the night at Shaver’s house and awoke with Shaver standing over her bed.
In December 2010, Shaver sent one of the girls a new laptop computer for her birthday, which the family gave back, police said.
Although this wasn’t the first time the girls or their family members had seen Shaver stroll through their neighborhood, they were hesitant to sign complaints against Shaver, police said.
The next day a teacher at nearby Liberty School told police she saw Shaver sitting in the school parking lot. She snapped a cell phone picture and e-mailed it to police, according to the report.
Shaver was questioned but soon taken to Palos Community Hospital because he suffers from diabetes and was without his insulin, police said. His car and belongings, including cell phones and memory cards, were seized.
He met with investigators at the Orland Park police station on March 18 and gave them permission to search his belongings, police said. On his computer, police found an aerial map of one girl’s home, according to the report.
Shaver’s wife told police her husband isn’t a child molester. The mother who knows the Shavers told police she believes Shaver was disappointed he never had a daughter of his own.
Charges were not filed until March 21 so prosecutors could fully review the case and interview the relevant parties. Shaver was arrested that day and charged with stalking.

This Family has know this little girl almost 5 years. And when her mom lost her house this family took the little girl in and took care of her. THey took her to and from school. Made sure is was well care for. She live them 5 days a week. She would go and stay with her mom on Friday night then then on Sunday night this family would pick her up take her back to there house for the week. And if was going to spend the weekend with her dad this family would meet her Dad at the train. And then again on Sunday would pick her up for the week take care of her. THere time she would stay7 day. She went camping with them and very nice vac. She spent most of the summers with them. They got a 4 ft pool for her. She had her own room went to family get togethers. They love her and care about her. Nevery did they every ask for anything from this gilrs family. They also did many things for her Mother. And this is how you do a FAMILY THAT would do anything for you. How do they lay thier heads down at night and sleep knowing they have ruin this family. LOST JOBS and the HOUSE everything.. I hope someone who ones about this let this girls family know that they will nevery find other FAMILY like them and that they have lost A VERY GIVING LOVING FAMILY.

Maybe the man should have made contact with the mother instead of trying to find the daughter at school. Men that do that scare young children, especially when they seem to be creepy. Why did this guy undermine the mother's authority and try to find this girl, without her mother's permission? Personally, if it was my daughter, I probably would have done the same thing, especially after I told this man to stay away.

I am so sorry that this girl had to live with this pervert for 5 days a week! And CAMPING obviously should NOT have happened!! She spent summers with them and then a pool! And should anyone (Lynn) wonder if he wanted to see her in a bathing suit? And if she had her own room, why was he standing over her? He should have lost EVERYTHING for the awful things that ran through his mind while he was with her!! I wish young children should never have to deal with pedophiles like this EVER!!!!! These are the kind of people I have to warn my children about!! They will ALL end up in the same place in the end and I feel sorry for anyone who could even THINK of standing by their side!! People like this can NOT be rehabilitated!
