Orland School District 135 paraprofessional Melanie Walsh took a new position with the district in June as a secretary, after 15 years with the district. On Sept. 21, Walsh was informed that she could take back her old parapro position and sign away the right to file a grievance, or be terminated.
All that was apparently said to Walsh is that board members were unhappy with the hiring process, though others contend nothing was wrong with the hiring method. Board members John Carmody, Ann Gentile, Tom Cunningham and Tina Zekich voted for the demotion, while members Lynne Donegan, Mary Bragg and Joe LaMargo voted against.
Since then, the Illinois Federation of Teachers has filed a demotion grievance against the district, and an unfair labor practices claim will follow.
IFT Field Service Director Deneen Pajeau estimated the litigation could cost the district $100,000.
READ ON for more information about the legal process that could follow in Walsh’s case.
What do you think should now happen in this matter?

Looks like some political hanky panky going on. Someones friend didn't get the job?

Looks like someone's friend did get the job.
Strictly financially speaking - what's the difference in her two salaries? How many more years till her retirement? Will it be financially worth it to the district and all it serves to pursue this? Might be wiser to set some stricter hiring practices such as no hires of relatives of those in administration, public posting of open positions, etc. Money is tight. Sometimes you have to pick your battles righteous or not. As a former teacher I have fully supported our unions but this hire looks like political hanky panky as mentioned before.

Gee, looking at option #1 on this poll, we the public might as well view that everything that happened to Melanie should be “expunged from the record” and pretend like it never happened so the Board can suddenly play nice nice and any investigations into their alleged corruption, personal and professional lack of moral ethics, and the infamous divide and conquer mentality of four board members will abruptly cease. Reality check…expunged doesn’t mean it never happened; it means it was erased from public records!!! At this point, a legal investigation into the board policies/behaviors is mandatory in order to protect the innocent, like Melanie. Otherwise, history is only going to repeat itself and these board bullies are only going to be wiser for their ware. Now that is a scary thought! What don’t we know? Isn’t this the same board that supposedly was recently looking into keeping criminals off the board? Did these 4 side together and vote not to do that until their terms were over???????
They had no problem publically humiliating/executing Melanie’s job. In fact in their arrogance, they couldn’t even make a statement to the public! Why? Because they are not being held accountable for their actions.
Vote #3 and add: immediate recall votes for the current 4 board members who demoted Melanie, and/or instantaneous resignations from the same said four board members. Stop them while there is a chance! There is a board meeting in two weeks time!!!

Accountability is up to us. Gentile, Cunningham, Carmody and Zekech are counting on us to forget about this. Unfortunately, the public tends to let things blow over, and by the next election, all is forgotten. The press is equally guilty of this. The question, now is are we going to let this go?
Are all of those people who protested this demotiion going to show up when the Carmody, Cunningham, Gentile and Zekich are forced to reinstate Mrs. Walsh and giver her back pay and have to pay the board's attorney's fees?
Will the press run a front page story when this happens? Will they remind us of how foolishly Gentile, Cunningham, Zekich and Carmody wasted our tax dollars when the next election rolls around?
I don't want to see local politics get dirty, but I think we need to know who we are voting for before we vote. Let's face it, if Tom Cunninghgam didn't run for trustee, most people would still see him as this amiable realator. We keep hearing that "everyone knows about...", but why doesn't anyone say something before we vote?
I'll do my part, but I can't do it by myself.

John Paul - I agree with you! But to me....I don't think its so much as "everyone knows about..., but why doesn't anyone say something before we vote". Its really more a situation comprised of 2 issues.
One - People are not doing their homework to find out about the candidates running. Unfortunately, too many people vote based on who friends, family and other elected officials ask them to vote for, without finding out much about the candidates. Most of this "everyone knows" information is out there before the elections. Just need to do a little research and not vote blindly based on others endorsements.
Two - the bigger problem....people just don't go out to vote anymore. While its important to remember things like this, it doesn't mean a hill of beans if they don't actually cast a vote during every election. And now days, there really no excuse not to vote. College kids, military members, vacationers/snowbirds can vote absentee, and the rest of us no longer have to worry about voting only on one day. The early voting option is wonderful! The only excuse not to vote now days should only be for those with a last minute medical emergency or death in the family.

Silence only breeds violence! We need to speak up! There is an excess of availability in order to get the word about these 4 adult bullies out into the open. Communication is the key here. People need to talk to each other. Suggestions can be: local radio shows/channels could discuss the issue; heck, make a button; local places of worship can be asked to speak about ADULT BULLYING; (it is obviously not just a child issue), we can display campaign/petition signs in our yards, windows, and cars. Social Networking sites can be utilized to create a countdown to the next board meeting; petitions can be signed to ask for the immediate removal of these 4 parasites from the board. We voted them in, now it is time to acknowledge our mistake and get rid of them. If we don’t, they will silently snicker ‘no comment’ at us because we voted them in.
Actions always speak louder than words!!!!!

Ms Walsh should never have been asked to step down. They did their vetting and interviewing and gave her the position. She wasn't doing the job poorly either.
While I would normally just have picked the first option because it would cost taxpayers less and be less of a financial impact on the schools/student, I went with the 3rd option, where Ms. Walsh is also awarded funds for damages. But I would have prefer that the amount paid for the damages were to come directly out of John Carmody, Ann Gentile, Tom Cunningham and Tina Zekich's pockets. Then maybe elected officials will get the hint that you can't just say "sorry" for your unethical decisions, but you have to be willing to back up your decisions financially if you're wrong too.

"awarded funds for damages out of their pockets" would really be the answer for " them " and others who foolishly exploit the public.
