South Suburban DUI Arrests, March 3
Rollovers, pond landing and hangups in the median. Tell-tale signs of an arrest in the making this week in the Southland's drunken driving reports.
Feb. 5: Police were called about a rollover accident near Corso Drive and Wolf Road around 1 a.m. A witness told police the car was driving north on Wolf Road when it crossed over the southbound lanes and into the adjacent ditch, police said. The car continued across Corso Drive where it then rolled over, ending in the ditch north of Corso, according to the report. Police saw beer cans in the car, smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath and the driver later tested positive for drinking, police said. Samuel Temich-Cocuyo, 27, of the 9000 block of Kennedy Court in Orland Park, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without a valid license, driving an uninsured vehicle and improper lane use.
Feb. 4: Police were called about a one-vehicle crash in the 15700 block of Harlem Avenue around 1:10 a.m. Officers found a pickup truck straddling the center median strip on Harlem Avenue facing north, with tire tracks in the snow showing the truck came from 158th Street, police said. The driver underwent field sobriety tests, but the results weren’t listed, according to the report. Angel L. Soto, 52, of the 6000 block of Washtenaw Avenue in Chicago, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence with a blood-alcohol level greater than .08, improper lane use and driving in the wrong lane.
Feb. 3: Police were called about a possible intoxicated driver in the 8800 block of 143rd Street around 5:10 p.m. A witness said an SUV was driving erratically and ran over the curb, police said. Police smashed bushes and tire tracks in the snow leading to the SUV, according to the report. The driver’s breath smelled like alcohol, she slurred her speech and failed field sobriety tests, police said. A small child was found in the vehicle’s rear seat, according to the report. Vianey Nikolopoulos, 43, of the 8100 block of Katy Lane in Orland Park, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence with a blood-alcohol level greater than .08 and endangering the life of a child.
Feb. 2: Police were called about a car stuck straddling the median strip in the 15600 block of Harlem Avenue around 12:45 a.m. The officer found the car with all four wheels off the pavement, police said. The driver’s breath smelled like alcohol, he stumbled while getting out of his car and failed field sobriety tests, according to the report. Peter V. Creevy, 62, of the 7700 block of 158th Court in Orland Park, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and improper lane use.
Feb. 17: Madelyn M. Goga, 18, of 8600 block of South Mayfield, Burbank, was charged with two counts of driving under the influence and disobeying a traffic control signal, according to a report. Goga was stopped and police allegedly determined he was under the influence of alcohol, according to the police report.
Feb. 15: Claude A. Hensley, 29, of the 7000 block of West 88th Place, Bridgeview, was charged with two counts of driving under the influence and improper lane use, according to a police report. Hensley was stopped at around 4:16 a.m. near 11900 S. Harlem Ave. after the vehicle was called into police. Officers reported bloodshot eyes on the driver and smelled an odor of alcohol on his breath. Hensley failed field sobriety tests, police said.
Feb. 12: Gabriel Orozco, 39, of the 4100 block of Crestline Street, Chicago, was charged with two counts of driving under the influence and improper lane use, according to a police report. Orozco's vehicle was stopped at about 2:35 a.m. near 12100 S. Harlem Ave. for improper lane use. The driver showed signs of driving under the influence, police said, and later submitted to a Breathalyzer test.
Feb. 17: Stephen A. Kitz, 28, of Oregon, OH, was charged with driving under the influence. Police found him at 3:07 a.m. in the 9400 block of Kedzie Avenue slumped over his steering wheel and stopped in the southbound lane, police said. After waking Kitz, officers had to help him out of his car at which point he said he had "way too much to drink," police said. An ambulance was called, but he refused treatment. Police say that a breath test revealed a blood alcohol level of .154, almost twice the legal limit.
Feb. 17: Michael C. Taylor, 23, of Chicago was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. Taylor was stopped at 1:42 a.m. in the 9500 block of Kedzie Avenue after making an illegal turn on red, police said. He failed several field sobriety tests and declined to take a breath test, police said. He was also cited for driving an uninsured vehicle, police said.
Feb. 16: Darius D. Tillman, 23, of the 3300 block of Hazel Lane in Hazel Crest, was cited for driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a blood alcohol content of more than .08, transportation of alcohol, turning improperly at an intersection, driving without insurance and improper lane usage at 12:28 a.m. at the intersection of Harlem Avenue and Lincoln Highway.
Feb. 16: Stephen A. Sleinheksel, 37, of the 12200 block of Gregory Street in Blue Island, was cited for driving under the influence, driving with a blood alcohol content of more than .08, improper lighting, driving with a suspended license and driving without insurance at 10:01 p.m. on the 21100 block of Wolf Road.
Feb. 19: Ahmad Al Shalabi, 35, of the 9800 block of Ridgeland, Oak Lawn, was charged with driving under the influence, possession of a controlled substance, speeding, and transporting an open container of alcohol, according to a police report. Police stopped his car at about 2:50 a.m. in the 13300 block of Harlem Avenue going 74 mph in a 45-mph zone. Shalabi performed field sobriety tests and was arrested.
Feb. 23: Robert J. Stephens, 57, of the 9000 block of W. 140th Street, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, BAC great than .08, failure to reduce speed, improper lane usage and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, after a witness reported a car in a small pond off 151st and Oak Park Avenue. Stephens was wet from the knees down, with mud on his hands and face. Stephens told officers the last thing he remembered was passing Forestview before realizing he drove into a pond, according to the report. Officers smelled alcohol on his breath and he was slurring his speech. Stephens reportedly failed field sobriety tests. Police took Stephens to the Oak Forest Police Station, where he blew a .138.
Feb. 23: Tyronda R. Bennett, 32, of the 13900 block of S. Central Park Avenue, Robbins, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, BAC more than .08, and possession of cannabis, following a traffic stop in 15200 block of S. Pulaski Road. Police were called to the scene after a motorist reported a truck stopped in the right lane of traffic on Pulaski Road. At the scene, police found Bennett asleep behind the wheel of her pickup truck. After several attempts to wake Bennett, police unlocked the truck and woke Bennett, according to the report.
Feb. 17: Saren Henshaw, 45, Plainfield, was pulled over in the 700 block of East Maple Road when officers noticed her driving erratically. She was issued a ticket for DUI and for driving an uninsured vehicle.
