'We're Not Skinheads,' Says Man Hurt in Ashford House Beating
Brandon Spiller was hospitalized after his "European Heritage Group" was set upon in Tinley Park by a mob of "anti-racist" attackers. He has "no idea why" anyone would want to hurt him or his newfound friends. "They terrorized us," he says.

The 29-year-old Wisconsin resident was among those who met to dine at Ashford House in Tinley Park Saturday, only to be "terrorized" in an ambush. His clan of about 15 to 20 included people from all over the country who were interested in joining the European Heritage Group, which he said was holding its first meeting around 12:30 p.m. in a back area of the Irish-rooted restaurant on 159th Street.
"We were just meeting for networking and helping people out and finding resources available in our area for those of European descent," he said. "It was just a meeting to get to know each other."
But the group didn't even have a chance to get down to business that afternoon, he said. Shortly after ordering appetizers, a brigade of about 15 masked people clad in black and armed with nunchucks, metal batons, hammers and table legs marched into the restaurant in a "single-file" line, he said. They pitched a chair at Spiller's table and kicked off what police call a "mob-style beating".
"It's almost as if it was a terrorist attack," said Spiller, who was hospitalized after the melee with wounds to his eye and head. He received eight staples to mend a gash on his head. "They terrorized us."
He said group members "still have no idea why" their assailants would want to target them.
The group's premise, Spiller told Patch, is to "help other European people and group members" in a variety of ways, such as giving family assistance or networking to find jobs. Spiller, who is unemployed, added that in today's economy, people need all the help they can get.
An "anti-fascist" forum posted a response to an early Patch story about the incident, saying members of a group known as Anti-Racist Action descended on the restaurant “where the 5th annual White Nationalist Economic Summit and Illinois White Nationalist Meet-and-Greet" was reportedly taking place.
But Spiller insists that just wasn't the case.
"We have no idea why they came after us," he said. "And they attacked everybody. Not just those in our group. They attacked patrons in the restaurant as well."
Spiller described the weaponry in detail, though steel batons and hammers are the only weapons listed in court records that detail the arrest of five accused assailants.
Ashford House owner Mike Winston confirmed Tuesday that the attackers brought more than just hammers and batons to his restaurant.
"They had all kinds of things with them," he said, noting that some in the attacking group did rumble with patrons in the main dining area.
Defendants claim victims are associated with white supremacy forums WhiteNewsNow and StormFront, Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Mike Deno said on Monday. Spiller denies that, saying, "we're not racist."
He believes attackers were clued into the heritage group's meeting by a "mole," he said.
"They think that a member who kept saying he was going to show up … calling and saying 'I'll be there, I'll be there,' and then he never showed up, may have told the (Anti-Racist Action) about it," he said.
Asked why Tinley Park was chosen as a meeting area, Spiller demurred, saying he wasn't the coordinator. He said the woman who organized the meeting—she wasn't available for comment Tuesday—changed the location a couple of times.
"It was going to be at a private venue and at the last minute, she changed it," he said. "She picked a place that she thought we would be safe."
By that, he said, he meant that organizers didn't want people coming from out of state to be in a "bad part of town."
"If it's the ghetto, I wouldn't want to meet in that area," Spiller said. "There are always bad parts of town. I think she did some research and picked a location that just looked safe."
He said safety didn't even cross his mind until the aggressors entered. His vaguest memory is of lunging for a chair to defend himself, he said.
"My guess is that maybe because we were all white, they considered us white supremacists," Spiller said. "We didn't have anything associated with white supremacy on us. All our vehicles were searched (by police) before we left."
Spiller admits that he did have a firearm in his car. But it was legally registered to him, in a case and was kept separate from its ammunition as Illinois law requires during transport. There's nothing wrong with having a gun if you are a legal gun owner, Spiller insists.
At least one other person in Spiller's dining party also had a gun—his, however, wasn't legal, officials said. Francis John Gilroy Jr., 65, of West Palm Beach, Fla., was charged with unlawful possession of weapons by a felon. Court documents indicate that Gilroy is a "transient."
He admitted to police that he had a loaded semiautomatic handgun in his car, according to court documents. He was convicted in 2002 of manufacturing marijuana in Lowndes County, Ga., prosecutors said, and is not permitted to have a weapon.
Steven E. Speers, 33, of Grand Forks, N.D., was also dining at Ashford House at the European heritage table. He was arrested that day on a warrant out of Dallas County, Texas, for possession of child pornography.
"We had no idea about the one who had the child pornography warrant," Spiller said. "If we did, he wouldn't have been allowed to meet with us. The other one, he didn't know the (gun) law."
Spiller said the melee came to an abrupt halt when a patron at the restaurant socked an assailant and "knocked him out." Winston partially backed that statement on Tuesday. He clarified to say he wasn't sure the attacker was completely unconscious but he was "having a hard time" and those in his group carried him out in retreat.
Spiller said that as his wounds heal, he will remain confused about the incident.
"We're not white supremacists … we're not skinheads," he said. "We're just setting up a European Heritage Group."
Spiller's eye is getting better, slowly but surely, he said. His staples are set to be removed next week.

This clearly was an act of blind marxist terrorism upon the community. Everybody was attacked, the empolyees, the business owner, the patrons belonging to other dining groups.
This was an attack on the entire community. Everybody was attacked in the restaurant. The waiters who tried to defend themselves and other patrons were attacked. We cannot allow such Marxist hate and terrorism to take root in our towns.

The bottom line is this is America. In America the 1st Amendment of the Constitution allows for people to assemble without fear of attack. Not only was this specific European Heritage group's Federal Civil Rights violated, but the general community dining in Irish restaurant had their civil rights violated by the violent criminals attacking the Irish establishment.

I totally agree, Karen. The use of the word 'clan' by The Patch, clearly is putting their media spin on this event. Bottom line is these people meeting at Ashford House were not causing any disruption and it's a shame that we all need to be on high alert no matter where we are because criminals seemingly can enter any establishment and start a melee. You are right, Megan, parents should be teaching their children morals and values at home - that basic value has sadly gone astray .somewhere along the line.

In just SW Cook County there are numerous Greek, Italian, social groups. All designed to network and promote the preservation of their cultures. Most meet in a Greek, Italian restaraunt. Sound familiar ? Jewish groups exist worldwide, meeting in Synagogues and Jewish eateries.
Why is it only offensive to promote your ethnicity if you're white ? There are black groups, jewish groups, Islamic groups, hispanic groups etc.. It seems like they are all supported by their constituencies without drama.
Until that group becomes a criminal element, let them be.
The RICO act allows for lengthened sentences for those affiliated with a criminal enterprise. It also allows for the prosecution of leaders that organize events or actions even though they were not physically present. The "travel act" also allows for prosecution of those crossing state lines to commit crimes. Look into RICO Ms. Prosecutor.

Biker - You are right. My point was to illustrate Brandon's group is not promoting "European Heritage", it is promoting the heritage of CERTAIN people of European descent. They have that right, but I suspect their name is not as all-encompassing as it sounds. Brandon, in my book, is guilty of the sin of omission. And lest my point be misunderstood, I am against extremists of any ilk. Those who were whacked, those who did the whacking, represent the smallest minded of us. That's a fair point, although it is very speculative. Maybe it is Northern Europeans. So would it be OK with you if they called themselves a Northern European club? Personally, I wouldn't want to join such a club but I think they would have every right to do it and it wouldn't make them a hate group. The only group that is clearly and definitely a hate group is this "HARM" group that did the attacking (and their choice of an acronym really says it all doesn't it?). Tinley Park police, why haven't you rounded up the rest of them yet? Why aren't the videos on the news so people can call in and identify the other perps?

There are so many things about this whole attack this that just saddens me. People thinking they can attack other people violently because:
1. They don't do their homework to find out who people really are.
2. Both the attackers and some commentors on these stories are using stereotype profiling to make uneducated assumptions about victims and other commentors,
3. That there are people out there who feel justified in promoting violence and other hate crimes just because they think they know better then someone else.
4. Finallly, some how these comment boards all turned into a platform to discuss concealing gun rights.
VERY SAD PEOPLE. The main topic that should be discussed is how do we stop the vicious cycle of hate crimes & uneducated stereotype profiling of people. What can we do to break the cycle of intolerance that never seems to go away? People are people, we all are made up of the same blood and tissue. What makes us different from each should be considered an asset, not a something to be hated.
I know, its a Utopian thought. But the answer really is so simple. Parents need to start teaching their children and enforcing tolerance and acceptance of others. Many of these thoughts of hate and intolerance are learned from their parents or other children. Also, don't accept the "kids will be kids" when you see teasing and bullying going on.
Bottomline - Embrass Differences People. Life would be boring if we were all the same.

Jan, your syntax is flawed. White is not a heritage, but all whites have a heritage whether it's Swedish or Croatian or South Carolinian. I never indicated that Italians and Greeks were not white. And to answer your final question..any type of heritage that white person chooses to promote. I never indicated that all whites have the same heritage...only that they have the right to endorse their heritage, regardless of what it is.

I am not defending or promoting anyone. I'm against gossiping and bullying and defending the responsiblity of waiting for the real truth supported by facts and evidence before people jump to any conclusions.
Sick of people accusing people of being something by only posting links to articles or website that have opininated comments without any facts to prove them. Its what keeps this vicious cycle of hate, intollerance and stereotyping going.
Just like in the Zimmerman case down in Florida....I will not take a stand for or against an individual or group until after all the FACTS are made available. Until then, its all just vicious gossip and another form of bullying that needs to stop.

Not only is it a Hate Crime by any reasonable stretch--it is also Terrorism, if you think about it! The goal is to terrify people with certain opinions into thinking that they had better not speak their mind. And actually it is more effective terrorism than Al Qaeda. I mean we all know they'd like to kill us, but we aren't particularly scared since there are so many more of us than there are of them. By contrast, if you wanted to belong to a social club of northern europeans (whether or not you had any political aspects or any supremacist beliefs) you would be quite scared by this attack, wouldn't you be? So these people are not only terrorists, but they have achieved a certain terroristic success via terrorism far better than the muslim fanatics who people think of as the essential terrorists!
The other interesting irony is that on their websites they call themselves "anti-fascists" but if you read the history of Mussolini and the Nazis this sort of terrorism is *exactly* what those people did.

Studies show that a lot of members of white racist groups are white guys who spent time in prison and were raped by black guys. Sadly, it sounds like there is little other way for inmates to protect themselves except by joining race-specific gangs. Thus, how ironic that these 5 young "anti-racist" white kids may have the opportunity to become better acquainted with the experiences that make people join the groups they so despise. I guess they'll probably look to black prison gangs for protection, since they seem like they wouldn't fit in with white prison gangs. Interesting to see how that works out for them.

anthony, you know what would make a great deterent to those poor 'white kids'? If they knew they would not have it easy if they went to jail. Even if I were not already disinclined to commit crimes, I would be DARN SURE even if I wasn't, because I DON'T WANT TO GO TO PRISON. Bad things happen. If that meant I could never drink Coke or eat Steak or even DRIVE a car, all things I LOVE to do, which ARE LEGAL, I would stop tomorrow. So if that poor white kid is too stupid to get arrested repeatedly (because they put in first time offenders for non-felonies and everybody over fifteen knows that), please, let him go and the herd can be thinned.

No matter what, law abiding citizens (the group that was having the luncheon) were physically assaulted by non-law abiding armed attackers. Any one of us could have been in that restaurant at that time and could have also have been a victim. Illinois is the ONLY state that does not allow law abiding citizens to carry (bear) firearms for lawful defensive purposes!! OUR Constitional Rights to "keep and BEAR arms are being violated by Illinois legislators and law enforcement every day! This has got to change.

What I find funny is that this guy is saying that they are not "racist skinheads", in the articles I read it never referenced them as that, is referenced them as "white supremacists". So to me he just confirmed that they were a racist group. I do not agree with the way the other group "Anti Racist Action" went in and beat & damaged property, they could have easily protested outside the restaurant to voice their anti racist beliefs. My question is why Tinley? what were they meeting for, I am sorry but I would not travel from Wisconsin, North Dakota etc.. for a friendly meet & greet, they had to have had another agenda. To me both sides are to blame, there had to have been problems between these groups to prompt the attack. The victims here are Ashford House, their employees, and other patrons of the restaurant that day.

The ONLY criminals of this incident are the attackers. I really don't care if you agree with the reason for the meeting. It was a non-criminal event...allegedly. Militant actions however justified are still subject to the law of the land.
For all of the concealed carry people...I legally carry concealed every single day and I am expert with my weapons. This was no place to introduce a gun. We would be talking about another TP mass shooting with innocent casualties.

I do not think it is appropriate to blame the victims of the attack. They may be small minded not very nice people who think that northern europeans are superior to the rest of the world--or they may not be. We don't know. But assuming the worst about them because they were attacked by these thugs--is inappropriate. If you browse the websites of the crazies, you will see that they brag about getting in vicious street battles. And one of the people arrested (who just made bail, btw!) has "Kill" as his myspace nickname and possibly his neck tatoo. They seem like real lowlife scum looking to attack people and using ideology as a bit of excuse.

There is nothing wrong with exploring one's ethnic heritage, like learning how to polka or make lefse. The difference is that "white" is not a heritage; it's a skin color. Tinley resident I agree, if this was a business meeting, why did they have to keep changing locations from private residence to somewhere in public where they felt safe? That isn't normal.There are peaceful, productive, meaningful meetings and parties everyday all over the Chicago area that are not threatened in any way.
I hate the violence.I wonder what the other group was angry about.Did this harmless European Heritage Association steal the other groups knitting needles?

Russ, I do not think that the "European Heritage Association" was harmless. I believe they were meeting for something other than talking about work as they say, oh sorry "working for whites"!!, right there in those words shows they were a racist group. I dont agree with the violent way that the Anti Racist Action broke up the meeting, they could have protested their anti-racist beliefs in a more civil manner. I think there is more to the story & more problems between the 2 groups that we do not know & will probably never find out. There were too many people from other states involved, I believe they had some sort of agenda that the ARA wanted to stop. Why would you travel across country to meet at a little restaurant in Tinley to talk about "future job opportunities".

I agree that there is some decent chance that the people attacked are some sort of northern european chauvinists who don't much care for other people--ie not the nicest people in the world. But I guess I suspect that anybody who joins race or ethnic-specific groups have some degree of antipathy toward others, so they would hardly be unique in this way. But the main point is: just because this band of vicious thugs have labeled them neo-Nazis or whatever I would not assume that they are anything close to that. If this was a Jewish restaurant and the Jewish owner, Jewish employees, Jewish patrons and an Ultra Orthodox Jewish group meeting for lunch, were all attacked by a mob that crossed state lines and attacked them for their political views. This would be a FBI case.

It's disappointing that so many people posting here from the Tinley Park area are clearly at least a little sympathetic to what anyone with a clue should easily identify as a white supremacist, fascist group of losers. It would be almost as disappointing if everyone was congratulating the attackers in this case, but not quite. While their stated purpose of eliminating racism and fascism sounds noble, their methods are most certainly not, and it suggests that it may not be their primary motivation. The whole thing just makes them seem like overzealous idiots playing “revolution” like children play “house”. They were wrong and irresponsible, and they deserve any legal consequences that come their way, but the apologizing and sympathizing with the "European Heritage Group" is just depressing. The only real sympathy in this matter should be for the owner and staff at Ashford House along with the unrelated bystanders who were caught in the melee.

They were 100% innocent. As a free man, I have the right to congregate with or segregate from any group that I choose. Since when is choosing your own friends and selecting your own social environment a crime ? Steven Speers the man charged with child porn was not with or affiliated with this group. He was dining with another party and was injured in the attack. When TPPD ran his name for warrants, he was wanted. Last time I checked, eating at a restaurant is a legal activity. Choosing your social group is legal, even if you choose to socialize within your own race. Get off of the PC cool aid, it's killing us.

The Ashford House doesn't have the legal right to run background checks on its patrons. The arrested Steven Speers was in fact not associated with the White Heritage group, he was another patron who happened to be attacked, as were several other groups, the employees and the owner.

Key words like "European descent" and "heritage." Changing the location to keep them safe. (Why would that be necessary if their motives were on the up-and-up?) A guy who doesn't know any better than to use the word "ghetto" with a reporter. Bottom line is this. The only victims of this incident were Mike Winston, his employees and his patrons that had nothing to do with either group. A group of people however misguided were peaceably assembling to promote their agenda. Armed assailants attacked said peaceably assembling group with weapons and mob action. Perpetrators also destroyed property and injured innocent (dining) patrons unaffiliated with the assembly.

BIKERX, I know you have read what I've written, as I have read what you have written. So I known that you know that I never once wrote that these people deserved it. I might find them repugnant. They might very well be unworthy of citizenship or some grand notion...but that isn't my call. It isn't any of our call. ME not liking them doesn't mean that they should be beaten. Maybe they WERE conspiring to do something terrible. I do not KNOW that. It was terrible they were attacked, because it is a mark against our society that we cannot overcome such bigotry with anything short of violence. Ghandi took down an empire by not eating (exaggeration alert), we cannot stop neo-Nazis from eating lunch in a suburb without them getting beaten up? MAYBE they deserve some retribution...but we do not know that, and it isn't for people off the street to decide that. Catch them doing illegal acts, then prosceute them.

There is nothing wrong with White people meeting up to discuss "work for Whites." It's exactly the same as blacks having Affirmative Action. Nobody would dream about complaining about that. WIH, Judaism is a religion with a strong cultural association attached to it. YOU could be Jewish! That would be funny, given you a raving anti-Semite, but technically it is possible. You are not born a Jew. You know why? Because people can convert in and out of being Jewish. You can't convert out of being Irish (though I would imagine they might wish you would at this point). All religions with strict adherents have higher incidents of certain conditions or disorders or diseases. Same with ethnicities...the more xenophobic a race is, the more likely they are to repeat faulty genetic markers that weaken any given race. (Think red hair on the Irish, for an obvious example...that is a flaw in nature...in long ago times, that would get a person picked off in combat easier, or make the person more obvious even in hunting, thus less likely to kill prey and eat well.)

This is why I oppose the idea of "Hate Crimes". The attack by the self described "anti-racists" was pre-meditated and based on hatred of the victims beliefs. The beliefs of the victims are irrelevant. The white supremacists attacked no one, threatened no one. Should their lives be less valued because they hold ridiculous views?
The framers of the Constitution created the Bill of Rights to protect unpopular speech. Popular speech needs no protection from tyranny of the majority, to paraphrase Jefferson.
Liberal groups are not the only citizens protected by the 1st Amendment. Vigilante justice in defense of any cause is dangerous to our republic. If fringe groups, both left and right, are not afforded their Constitutional rights or punished for depriving others of theirs, they will resort to these tactics more often.

I agree with your whole post, I think, Dean Casper.
As ridiculous as their views may be, if they aren't actively hurting anybody, and we don't know they are plotting anything nefarious, we have to let them be. They have the same rights as a car club or book club. It doesn't take away our right to not believe them for a moment, but our belief is not our knowledge (same for everyone else).
If we fail to protect the worst amongst us, we have failed to protect us all.
Violence begets violence. Eventually, violent idiots miss each other and take out somebody truly innocent, who has no malice in their heart. THAT is an even greater tragedy. As much as I dislike the "White people are awesome" group that was the victim here, I will stand and applaud if they manage to rein in their want for retaliation. I hope they don't play the "We have to stand up for our rights and protect white people" card. You know who loses a race war? Everybody.

I almost forgot...something a little lighter of note...the guy that got interviewed (bet they are THRILLED he spoke up...) says "… we're not skinheads." Fine (well, no, not really, but...), but it doesn't help that your picture is you with your head shaved...it may have been for your wound to be attended to properly...still, bad happenstance, isn't it?

Uh, let's see, first the victims need to tell us what they wanted to talk about at that White oriented restaurant, then it can be decided if they have any rights. And hopefully their "Pioneer Little Europe Prospectus" isn't about trying to raise up a community profile for Whites, like all the popular races do to flex influence. And hopefully they aren't an open community, as they'd have to account for even the controversial people that may show up. Because that would be too darn democratic.

I have know brandon since he was 12 years old. Whats not known about the guy is he is disabled mentally handicapped. What I find funny is the person who reported this story had no idea he was. so in essence, he gave a interview and he is not even in charge of his own finances as his mother helps him make decisons due to his disability. I'm half jewish and native american. he had never said anything racist around me or my family and I know him pretty good. I feel he was possibly taken advatage of not only by this reporter and whatever group knew he was disabled that got him into this mess. he also suffers from Severe Psoriasis of his scalp. he always looked looked like a skinhead. maybe this group thought he was one and befriended him? only thing I can think of. I feel bad for him, after reading this. he's been taken advatage of by these people and he just wanted to make friends. he has always been made fun of because he looks like he does. whats sad these guys who attacked him and other people will probally be praised for trying to kill him. sad world indeed.

I can't imagine anything except convictions on this. And just as Morris Dee's Southern Poverty Law Firm did against the Aryan Nations, United Klans of America, and Tom Metzker, shortly after every one of those convictions, the victims in this horrific incident - including the Pioneer Little Europe supporters, the owner of the restaurant, and the wedding party - should all be sure to file big fat legal liability claims that will bring down the terrorist organization responsible and get all the victims on a nice recovery vacation to Hawaii. And remember to apply some of the money to that new model of the White community that you were meeting to discuss until the hate crime occurred.
