Whole Foods Taking Former Borders Space in Orland Park

The high-end organic and specialty grocery store is scheduled to open in Orland Park in fall 2012.

Orland Park is expected to get a new grocery store in the fall.

Whole Foods Market will be opening up a 27,000 square-foot store in the space formerly occupied by Borders Bookstore at 15260 S. LaGrange Road. The store will be the first Whole Foods in the south suburbs, joining 17 other locations throughout the Chicago area.

The store is expected to add between 150 and 160 jobs to the area, according to a release from the Austin, Tx.-based company.

“We greatly look forward to sharing our wide selection of high-quality natural and organic products with our new customers in the area, while also employing a team that is passionate about what we sell,” said Michael Bashaw, Midwest regional president at Whole Foods Market, in the release.

Whole Foods will join other area grocery stores, including Trader Joe's, Jewel Osco, Costco, Meijer and Target

Talks of a Berkot's opening in the former Green Food and Produce location at 11333 W. 159th St. have happened, though sources have yet to confirm full plans.

In 2011, Dominick's closed about one block north from where Whole Foods will open. Randy's Market also closed after 25 years.

So much for the theory espoused here on this site that Whole Foods won't come here because there are not enough "College Graduates"

Glad to see that corporate opinions are changing when it comes to Orland. Whole Foods...it might have taken you a while to realize that Orland Park does have a highly educated population, but of course, it was the same excuse that Barnes and Noble gave for not wanting to build in Orland Park. That excuse doesn't fly not matter how you cut it. Now if we could only get some of the white table cloth establishments that some others on this site have been asking about.

Of course the deal is I will never go there. While I am a college grad, and I do make a good salary (The presumed target for stores like Whole Foods), I find Whole Foods, just like Trader Joes to be full of over priced frou-frou food. Give me good old Aldi.

Trader Joe's frou frou? C'mon...you can get a lot of good stuff there without spending too much. TJ's got me through a bevy of low paying jobs. WF definitely has higher prices but also has some great unique items, like Pu Erh tea (yes, that name is begging for a joke, but for anyone with any digestive issues at all it works wonders). This is a nice addition to the area. Now for that 75-100 person capacity bar-restaurant-performance venue...

YES!! We kept hearing rumors from some of the employees at the Willowbrook location. Similar to when we went to the Oak Brook Costco before they were here. Nice-TJ's, (Trader Joe's) Costco and soon to be Whole Foods right down the street!
A real gem Orland Park is and continues to shine more!

This is very welcome news and shows the Orland Park trade market and local demographics support this type of retailer/grocer.

I hope this doesn't discourage Pete's Fresh Market from opening in the old Dominick's store in 2013, after the Lagrange road widening project.

Whole foods is expected to open Sept of 2012, not 2013. It's a few doors down from Pandora's Rack.

I'm glad that Whole Foods is coming to our area, but I thought Pete's Produce is coming in the Dominick's location. I hope they still do. Looking forward to Berkots opening up on 159th and Wolf. Any idea when????

Pamela - Pete's Produce wont be there for a while yet, sometime in or after 2013. Can't remember the exact date or if they even have one. But they said they weren't going to open until after all the planned construction was done on LaGrange Rd. They were even going to rent out their parking lot to IDOT to store their trucks over night. Since they haven't even started down on that part of LaGrange, it will be a while yet. http://orlandpark.patch.com/articles/petes-fresh-market-may-replace-dominicks-in-a-few-years

Hopefully someone else knows more about Berkots. Last I heard they were still working with the Village to approve their bldg permit as of Jan 25.

It is great that the property manager brought in a solid company that will improve the community well-being (as opposed to a tobacco monger, or some other carrion).

The Borders near me (Wheaton) closed of course as well, but it has no replacement yet. A Whole Foods happens to be already next door to the old Border space.

There is definitely an audience in Orland Park for Whole Foods. I am glad is coming.
