The McCord Gallery and Cultural Center's brings a Civil War exhibit that highlights hundreds of rare historic artifacts.
When you gaze upon the artifacts at the McCord Gallery and Cultural Center's latest exhibit it is easy to be transported back in time. The handwritten letters, worn uniforms and rare firearms all work together to create a moving image of the Civil War. The exhibit has become an annual tradition for the Palos Park gallery and is supported in large part by the collection of Dr. Joseph Matheu. The southwest suburban physician has displayed his carefully curated artifacts at McCord for the past five years. "It was a war that had a deep impact on our country," Matheu said. "It put family against family, brother against brother." The real impact of the war can be felt with each piece. Tables are filled with countless remnants of battle. Guns …

New Lenox resident Denise Du Vernay considers herself a "Simpsonologist" and a friend of the family.
Last night’s milestone 500th episode of The Simpsons had special significance for me: It’s more than just a TV show, more than just a cartoon. I’ve argued that message at length in libraries, bookstores, colleges and the Wisconsin Historical Society. I’ve been interviewed by Milwaukee’s Fox morning show, public radio, and magazines in Wisconsin and South Dakota. I will speak at the New Lenox Public Library about The Simpsons and my research April 26. Twice last year I visited Fox, including an orchestral recording, a voice recording and a tour of Film Roman, where I met many of the artists and scene planners who work tirelessly to make my favorite thing. Although they are the manifestation of much hard work and dedication, I consider my …

Country heartthrobs Brad Paisley and Keith Urban better watch their back. Orland Park's duo, The G Brothers, are quickly making a name for themselves on the music scene.
Billy and Brian Grant found a unique opportunity in Karaoke. The Grants recently performed at a holiday show held over the Thanksgiving holiday at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, along with headliners Jordan Sparks and Lauren Alaina—both of American Idol fame. Organized by KMLE Country 108—a popular Arizona country music station—the 20th annual “Breakfast Show at Night” event provides an evening of entertainment, and also raises funds for children in need throughout the state. The show will be broadcast in the Phoenix-Scottsdale area throughout Christmas weekend. The brothers’ inclusion in the “Breakfast Show at Night,” however, was unexpected. “While in Arizona over the summer, KLME hosted an event, so we decided to check it out. It …
