I bought 12 "dimmable" CFL bulbs to replace the incandescent bulbs in my home theater room. I figured it would save me some money and keep the room a little cooler when they were fully lit. Well they barely dim at all and strobe like crazy and shut off randomly when the dimmer switch is turned down completely. I pulled them all and put them up in the kitchen. Switch Off: Incandescent Bulbs Soon Will Burn Out for Good

As a result of U.S. government energy-efficiency standards, traditional incandescent light bulbs are being phased out. Local electrical contractor Tom Sullivan says consumers need to be educated so they can make the right choices moving forward.

Don’t be surprised if some of those old jokes about how many blankety-blanks it takes to change a light bulb bounce back into the comedic mainstream of life. No kidding. The job is not as easy as it used to be, not anymore. “The consumer needs to be educated on what it is they are buying and to find out if the new apples they are buying are equal to the old oranges they used to buy,” said Tom Sullivan of Sullivan Electrical Contractors and Epic Lighting Solutions in Oak Forest. “Because you can’t get the old oranges any more.” Sullivan’s comments come in direct response to energy-savings measures being implemented by the U.S. government. Comings & Goings: Great Escape Opens Superstore in Orland Park

Bridge Teen Center celebrates second anniversary with community open house on Saturday, May 19.

Home leisure retailer The Great Escape has opened its first superstore in the former Linens-n-Things at 15854 S. LaGrange Road in Orland Park. “It’s a soft opening because we’re not 100 percent complete,” said store manager Jason Swinson. “We’ll have our grand opening in a couple of weeks, but we wanted to be open in time for Mother’s Day.” Swinson said the new store also is home to Chicago Home Fitness boutique, which moved from its former location at 14934 S. LaGrange Road. Swinson said The Great Escape acquired the fitness chain last year and is integrating those stores into its Great Escape locations. Monarch Life Cycle: Erlich Follows Them Through from Caterpillars to Butterflies

Evergreen Park resident Bob Erlich raises butterflies in his house and his garage. He then releases them back into the wild.

When he quit his job and stopped coaching baseball, Evergreen Park resident Bob Erlich went looking for something to do with his free time. He decided to raise butterflies in his back yard. Friends know him now as The Butterfly Guy. He is the curator of a butterfly garden at the Evergreen Park Public Library.
