About this column:
Your Orland, Tinley and Oak Forest Patch editors are thirsty ... and craving the outdoors. We make the ultimate sacrifice by touring the area's best beer gardens to help you cool off with a cold one outside, where you should be. Got suggestions? Leave them in the comments. The remaining days of summer might be numbered, but there's still plenty of time to grab some booze at your favorite beer garden, or try out a brand new one. Throughout the summer, your friendly Patch editors took on the daunting task of kicking back at reader-nominated beer gardens within our three-town radius. We each enjoyed the food offerings, sunshine, fresh air and an estimated two beers apiece. That's a lot of beer, folks. All for you. We also evaluated each based on service, seating options, beer selection and adult atmosphere. This week, we wrap them all up in a neat little package …
OF Bowl and The Park—Oak Forest I had been waiting for this one. The beer garden and sand volleyball courts behind the fence at OF Bowl were practically taunting me. I had been there before, years ago, but I was eager to return and see if it was all I had it cracked up to be. I was right: The Park is a little piece of retreat, bordering Cicero Avenue and tucked alongside Oak Forest Bowl. 1. Adult atmosphere. In our opinion, it doesn't get much better than this. The place almost feels like a secret adult hangout. With plenty of space for several games of bags, and two sand volleyball courts, …
Sam Maguire’s Irish Pub and Restaurant — Orland Mall parking lots usually bring to mind chaos, disturbingly impatient drivers with cars stuffed to the brim with, well, stuff, and in general are not my scene. And yet a solid, serene beer garden sits tucked away in a corner of Orland Square Mall’s giant lot. Sam Maguire’s Irish Pub and Restaurant has a peaceful beer garden that is good, but it could be great with a few service tweaks. The area itself is spacious and separated nicely from the mall drivers, enough of beer selection to keep most of us (a.k.a. non-beer snobs) happy and good food. …
Osteria Ottimo – Orland Park LaGrange Road does not evoke visions of peacefulness. More like road rage. So how could a beer garden so close to Orland’s backbone thoroughfare be such a stress free place to kick a few back? The answer may be obvious, but Osteria Ottimo has a whole lot going on. Great food for meals or just munching, spot on cocktails, massive wine list, and best of all, you don’t have to yell to talk to your faithful companions for the evening. 1. Adult atmosphere. On a recent Thursday night, it was just we older folks. No screeching kids within range. Frank Sinatra played …
Do you like booze?Well Southland, you're in luck. Many decry the lack of deep, probing journalism in the modern world but we're about to turn that all around. Your lovable Patch editors are embarking on the daunting and difficult journey of visiting beer gardens in Tinley, Oak Forest and Orland to tell you how they rate. That's right. We're making the ultimate sacrifice for YOU. We'll be stopping by one garden a week in each of our respective Patches to enjoy an outdoor beverage.
