Dental Health: Can I eat all of my favorite foods after getting dental implants?

As Winterset Dental specializes in dental implants in Orland Park, we often get asked by patients is they will be able to eat the same foods after getting dental implants as they did before. Short answer, absolutely yes.

You can enjoy all foods with implants the same as if you had your natural teeth. Dental implants are an effective solution to missing or damaged teeth, and are strong, long-lasting and natural in feeling and appearance. As implants are surgically placed in the bone to support artificial replacement teeth, with proper care they can last for many years to come.

As with many dental treatments, there is a period  after which you may need to limit certain foods or activities, but in no time you'll see virtually no difference between your dental implants and your natural teeth. Additionally, as local anesthetic is commonly used during the implant procedure and numbing effects may last for three to four hours, patients should not chew until it has completely worn off to avoid damaging their lips, tongue and cheeks. Hot drinks and foods should also be avoided when numb.

During the two weeks following the surgery, patients should avoid putting excessive pressure on the dressing area and teeth implants. This means that only soft foods should be eaten. Think of it as a great excuse to indulge in some extra ice cream! For more nutritious meals, if you are one not to indulge in ice cream, stick to foods like yogurt, oatmeal, pureed vegetables, soup or mashed potatoes.

You can start enjoying your favorite foods about three weeks after the procedure.

Once the dental implants have healed completely, you will never have to worry about agitating the site by eating. Durable and long-lasting, the implants can withstand all your favorite foods, so go ahead and enjoy everything from sticky buns and taffy to crusty breads and hard candies. Your dental implants can take it!
