Eagles' Varsity Hockey Demonstrate Strength in First Half of Season

After losing eleven seniors from the Eagles Hockey Varsity roster last year, it was anyone's guess as to how this season would be for the team. That question has been answered quickly as the Eagles have earned a 10-2 record in the Illinois High School Hockey League West division, and currently sits in third place behind Waubonsie and Naperville Central.

When asked about the season up to this point, head coach Keith Mizwicki described it as "an interesting journey."  "Every game is a new experience for us since we have so many new faces, " Mizwicki said.  "We are still learning to play as a unit and have had our share of ups and down but lately we are showing more consistency in our style of play."

And while stats change regularly, the Eagles have had at least two players listed in the "Top Performers" of the league since the beginning of the season.  Currently, in the Top 20 are Alex Howey, Bradley Surdyk, Adam Howey, and Nathan McCatty. In addition, the Eagles' two Varsity goalies have also made the "Top Performing Goalies" list, with senior Ryan Lewis at number 5 and sophomore Joey Chudzik at number 7 this week.

As the season has hit the proverbial halfway point, the Eagles have demonstrated that success didn't leave with the graduating seniors last year.  This weekend the Eagles will compete at the Loyola High School Thanksgiving Tournament, facing off Thursday morning against St. Rita, Friday evening against Mount Carmel, and Saturday afternoon against Loyola Gold.  All games can be viewed online live via www.highschoolcube.com.

The Thanksgiving tournaments typically mark the halfway point for high school hockey--with a season that ends regular play at the end of January, and playoffs for both the league and state in February and March.  For more information on the Eagles Hockey Program, or to see schedules or scores, please visit www.eagleshockeyclub.org.
