Have Fun and Grow a Little Greener at Lake Katherine Earth Day Celebration

Earth Day Celebration at Lake Katherine will offer fun for all ages, free saplings to first few hundred attendees, native plants, live owls and a petting zoo for kids. All free.

Looking for a little family fun to commemorate Earth Day? This Saturday, April 30, will be sponsoring a full day of events intended to entertain and create awareness about all things Earth friendly.

According to Bridget Provost, business coordinator at Lake Katherine, the "first several hundred people" to visit the preserve will receive a complimentary sapling courtesy of the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners, members of which will also be on hand to offer lawn and garden tips.

"We'll have lots of vendors who will be distributing info on green-friendly products for the home and garden," Provost said.

In addition to these informative booths, there will be a number of demonstrations for the young and young at heart. Live owls courtesy of the Little Red School House, a small farm animal petting zoo, a dog agility and fly ball show, tai chi demonstrations and hayrides are planned throughout the day.

The native plant sale will be a big draw for gardeners looking to green up their home landscapes. All plants for sale are locally grown.

With 125 acres of water, hiking trails and botanical gardens, Lake Katherine offers enough natural eye candy to inspire a greener way of life.

"Lake Katherine is just so beautiful," said Provost. "You don't really even need a festival to come out here."

Admission to the Earth Day celebration is free and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is weather dependent.

Lake Katherine is located at 7402 W. Lake Katherine Drive, Palos Heights. For more information, go to www.lakekatherine.org.
