When classes begin later this month, elementary students in Community Consolidated District 146 will be using a new writing book series that is "well-aligned with the Common Core State Standards."

The Aviator series by Pearsons Publishing Co. will be used for students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade at the start of the 2013-14 school year, according to a district press release. Along with meshing well with the Common Core, the series' focus on writing was a good fit with the district's own goals, said Nancy Schwab, the district's curriculum director.

“The strong emphasis on writing will be a new one for students, and
teachers," she stated in the release. "It’s a new way of thinking, teaching, etc. The students will take ownership of writing topics, pushing the writing to be more student-centered, and giving them some control.

"Common Core State Standards raised the standards, but D146 will raise that bar even further," she added. "We want to push our students to strive for more, and I feel that with this series we will be able to do so.”
