Jerling, Orland Jr. High Students Succeed in Chemistry Competition

Orland Jr. High's Thomas Panozzo took 1st at the "You Be the Chemist" regional competition and advanced to state, as did three Jerling students; Tom Brennan made it to the fourth round at state.

Several Jerling and Orland Jr. High students attended the "You Be the Chemist" regional competition on March 5 at Moraine Valley Community College. Three rounds of questions were given to the students and after each round, students were eliminated or moved on to the next round. Orland Jr. High's Thomas Panozzo took first place and advanced to the state competition, held April 3. Panozzo attributes his success to a great memory, plenty of studying, and help preparing provided by teachers Cheryl Knight and Jennifer Yerks. Other District 135 state competition qualifiers included Victoria Stavropoulos, Nick Macijunas, and Tom Brennan, all Jerling Jr. High students. Brennan was the top finisher for District 135 at the state level, making it to the fourth round. The hardest part of the competition? Students say it was memorizing so many chemicals and their reactivity. The best part of competing? Getting the chance to participate.
