Business Comings & Goings: El Cortez Closes in Orland Park

A look at new businesses coming into town and a fond farewell to those that have, for whatever reason, called it quits.

When El Cortez opened its newest restaurant on 191st Street in Mokena in December 2009, many customers wondered what would happen to its 171st Street and Wolf Road site in Orland Park.

The answer came recently when the chain closed the Orland eatery on June 26.

A manager at the Mokena store said, “There just wasn’t enough business to justify keeping it open.”

It’s not the first time the chain has closed a location. The original restaurant in Blue Island was shuttered years ago.

For now, fans can get their fill of enchiladas, fajitas and margaritas at the Mokena branch and the restaurant at 183rd Street and Cicero Avenue in Country Club Hills.

The owner changed the name to the same one he has on two popular restaurants he owns in northwest Indiana.

The store will be closed by the end of September, if not sooner. Gift cards are being accepted until the end but Borders Bucks expire July 31.
