Orland Park Bakery Setting Up New Home On LaGrange Road

Bakery owner is looking to keep the feel, the menu and the approach the same at the new location.

Dan Major and his family have a busy holiday season ahead of them.

Ordinarily, the Majors-owned Orland Park Bakery always has a busy holiday season from before Thanksgiving clear through Christmas, keeping up with hundreds of special orders. Just the famous alone causes lines to stretch outside the bakery’s .

But with a final date set at , as development plans for the will move forward, the 40-plus-years village staple had to look for a new space.

“We’re very excited about moving there,” Dan Major said about the bakery’s new location at 14850 S. LaGrange Road. “There’s plenty of parking there, and it’s easy to access both from LaGrange and Ravinia.”

The new space is a step up in square footage, going from to about 6,400 in the new, Major said. Much of the new space will be used on the back end for production, and storing excess orders. The space will likely come in handy, especially since 900 orders were made ahead of time for the last Paczki Day.

“Where do you put 900 orders?” Major said. “That was a proud moment for us, but it still was difficult. Now we’ll have plenty of room for production to work the way it needs to.”

But overall, Major isn’t looking to change much. The new store will have a very similar layout to the current location.

“We want to people to walk in and say ‘this is Orland Park Bakery, they just moved six blocks away,’” Major said. “We’ll be adding new equipment and cases. But the way we bake, making everything from scratch, all of that is staying the same.”

The bakery will most likely reopen in the new location in January. December was described by Major as their “busiest month,” though they have talked about possibly reopening before year’s end.

“January makes a lot more sense for moving, but if we can do it sooner we will,” Major said.

The operation is not a simple one to move, especially with needing refrigeration cases and two large ovens to function. New cases and ovens will be put into the new location to prevent extended down time. Smaller, more moveable items such as their mixers and pans will be moved over to the new location close to the opening date.

“We may be open at both locations for a very short period of time,” Major said. “But most likely we’ll close on Sunday as usual, and then re-open Tuesday at the new location.”

Major recommended keeping tabs on new developments on the Orland Park Bakery’s Facebook page, where they will announce any new plans.

“We’re looking forward to this being our new home for 40 more years,” Major said.
