Chick fil A and the 1st Amendment

Democrat pols trample the 1st Amendment to grandstand to score political points with a favored interest group

They came for the fiscal conservatives and I said nothing, they came for the American Exceptionalists and I said nothing, now the come for the Christians. This paraphrased classic quote came to mind watching Boston Mayor Thomas Mennio, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, and Chicago Alderman Moreno threaten to use the power of their government office to punish Chick fil A because of statement of their CEO, Dan Cathy, for expressing views supportive of traditional marriage. Mennio sent a letter to Chick fil A, which he released to the press, scolded Chick fil A that any business which express a thought contrary to his liberal ideology will not do business in BeanTown. Not to be outdone in Constitutional ignorance, Ald. Joseph Moreno of Chicago announced the business license of a coming Chick fil A in his ward will not be approved due to the non-support of Gay Marriage. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel back up the alderman by stating Chick fil A does not have "Chicago values" and is not elcome in the Windy City. Chick fil A, to their credit, does not discriminate against gays, married or otherwise. Chick fil A does not refuse to sell chicken to Gay Marriage supporters, does not discriminate against gays in hiring. Chick fil A is family friendly and conducts itself accordingly. Chick fil A is closed Sundays so employees can spend time with their families. Anyone who has worked retail or fast food can appreciate that. The most outrageous aspect of these three liberal politicians abuse of power is their complete disregard of the 1st Amendment of the Constitution. The 1st Amendment allows Americans to speak out without retribution from the government for said speech. Being denied the opportunity to sell chicken because the CEO spoke out against the pet issue of the politicos in power is a clear attempt by Mennio, Moreno, and Emmanuel to punish Chick fil A for not towing the Politically Correct line. Further troubling, is the fact that Emmanuel was Chief of Staff to President Obama. On my iBooks shelf is a copy of the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson artfully described the Colonies complaints with King George III. The grievances included the King punished business and individuals for no other reason than they spoke out against the King. Sound familiar? There have been noted liberals who have come to Chick fil A's defense. The ACLU stated though they support Gay Marriage, a terrible precedent would be set to chase the chain from Boston and Chicago. If a mayor can deny a business license for not supporting Gay Marriage, another mayor can deny another business a license for supporting Gay Marriage. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg stated it was a Constitutional violation what his counterparts were attempting. To my liberal friends who take to Facebook and Twitter to denounce Chick fil A and praise the actions of Mennio, Moreno, and Emmanuel, just remember, precedent will be set and they may come for you later. If you oppose the stance Chick fil A's stance, don't buy their chicken. If their views are as unpopular and backward as you claim, they will close in short order from lack of business. On Wednesday, August 1st, supporters of the 1st Amendment and those who oppose reckless use of government power will demonstrate their support of our Constitution by patronizing Chick fil A. A strong message to the power crazy pols. In a time of hideous unemployment, why would a politician not want a national chain that offers benefits, great hours and competitive pay not opening in their town? Whose interests are they serving?
