For Sandburg High School Senior Haneen Hadid an in-school field trip to learn about professionalism and interviewing skills paid off in just one day.
On a Friday, Carl Sandburg High School Applied Technology, Business and Family and Consumer Science Cooperative Education programs met in the school's little theater with Principal Julia Wheaton and Division Chairs Chris Erickson and Mark Fertel to learn about professionalism and interview skills. On Saturday, Hadid applied what she learned during a job interview and was hired at Network Real Estate Group.
Hadid said she specifically applied what was discussed about being respectful, professionally dressed, maintaining eye contact and being sure not to stutter.
"Dr. Wheaton told me to make sure to have questions prepared for my interview," Hadid said. "So I was sure to be ready with questions about my job responsibilities and about the other employees at the company. It helped me get the job over quite a few other candidates."
This in-school field trip is one example of the kind of lessons District 230's Successful Schools - Successful Students initiative supports. It is about preparing students with the rigorous curriculum they need to succeed while also providing relevant career and college readiness skills. Students participated in a highly informative presentation based on three topics including "Do's and Don'ts of Interviews," "When the Interview Actually Begins," and "Professionalism and Appearance." Students were engaged in a question and answer session where they had the opportunity to openly discuss past experiences they have had in interviews and the outcomes. For Hadid, the skills taught and suggestions made by the speakers helped her obtain a job related to a career path she hopes to follow after graduation.
