Sandburg senior's graphic arts class leads to job

Sandburg High School Senior John Walls was hired at Midwest Promotional Group after proving his ability to design and screen print, a skill he obtained working in Mark DiOrio's Graphic Arts class.

"I had to prove I knew the steps from designing a screen to cleaning off the ink and emulsion," Walls said, "Working with Mr. DiOrio in Graphic Arts class really gave me an advantage."

During the interview Walls recalled a previous speaker's advice from the Cooperative Education program about always dressing professional, asking questions and maintaining eye contact. He feels that this advice also helped him have a competitive edge.

"First impressions are the most lasting," said Ketih Vacey, VIce President of Midwest Promotional Group." "When speaking with John on the phone he was polite and direct to the point. He arrived 18 minutes prior to his interview time. This was an indicator to me that he allowed enough time for traffic so he could be on time. He was dressed for success; shirt, tie, dress slacks and dress shoes. His body language was also very important to me and he scored points for that as well. To me no matter what job you are applying for you should always put your best foot forward and that he did."

Working at Midwest Promotional Group Wells will be processing shipments, cleaning/reclaiming screen printing screens, working with design and logo placement, preparing garments for print and much more. He is excited to start his career-based position with a company that prints shirts for customers ranging from individuals to Fortune 500 companies and ships to more than 100 countries.
