At the IHSA Regional Speech Tournament on Saturday February 8, Carl Sandburg High School ’s Speech Team won both the Regional Championship in Individual Events and Performance in the Round.
Although she suffered from the flu, team leader Taylor Lach was a double Regional Champion in Humorous Duet Acting and Radio Speaking. “We all gave it everything we had and it paid off! I’m so proud of the team,” she said.
Out of the 14 individual events, Sandburg Speech won 7 and will be bringing 13 events to the Sectional Tournament on Saturday, February 15th, at Reavis High School. “Our Sectional is the toughest of the six Sectionals in the State,” commented Coach Michelle Etchason. “We’ll be ready and relaxed.”

Adding to the excitement of the day was the Performance in the Round Championship presentation of The Women of Lockerbie, a moving drama concerning the aftershocks of the 1988 terrorist bombing of Pan AM flight 103 over Lockerbie Scotland. The story focuses on an American couple who come to Lockerbie to find peace after seven years of grieving and the help they receive from the women of Lockerbie.
The Regional Champion The Women of Lockerbie cast includes Albert Tracy, Alexis Abbeduto, Andy Rich, Arlind Kolimja, Clare Morrisey, Haley Carrero, Helena Shaheen, Juli Vana, Lauren Fish, Matt Lusa, Melina Herman, Natalie Thompson and Rachel Witt.

Tom Lucas, a Sandburg Speech coach and professional actor, congratulated the cast, “They are a true ensemble. No matter where you look, you see the characters responding.”
