In The Rear View: Kustok Case Stalls Again and Candidates Question Each Other

We look back at a week of stalking, Tibetan chanting, candidate criticism, softball, school staffing and no progress in a court case.

Monday

It has been about six months since Jeanie Kustok was brought to Palos Community Hospital after she died from a gunshot wound to the head. Her husband Allan Kustok was later charged with murder, though the case has barely moved an inch in court since, as the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office continues to gather evidence. On Monday, a DVD of surveillance video taken from the hospital on Sept. 29, when her body was taken in.

Tuesday

Sandburg Girls Softball senior center fielder Kelly Sherridan knows her team has some rebuilding to do to repeat their championship feat from last year. But they got there as a team last year, and are ready to try again (video).

Wednesday

Orland School District 135 is looking to adjust their staffing as enrollment is projected to continue downward across the district in the next school year. But district staff hopes that through attrition, with several teachers retiring at the end of the 2010-2011 school year, no other faculty will have to be let go.

Thursday

A Park Forest man was accused of stalking two girls, ages 9 and 11, including one instance where he tried to get them to come into his car, and said he’d meet them the next day to get milkshakes. Jim M. Shaver, 56, was charged with stalking.

In a slight twist on our usual Viewfinder feature, Palos Editor Dan Lambert created a slideshow with audio of Tibetan monks, bringing their chanting and culture to Moraine Valley Community College.

Friday

The Orland Township-hosted forum for candidates running for Orland Park Village Board had a bit of a twist at the end. Before closing comments, candidates were given the opportunity to direct a few jabs, I mean questions, at each other. We have it cut into three rounds…ah parts (video).

Candidates for the Orland Fire Protection District offer their views on maintaining a budget and how the tax rate compares to other Orland taxing bodies.
