In the Rear View: Law Longarming, Long Goodbyes and Sex Assault

We look back at a week of warrant arrests, wage cases, continuing cases, power use, comings and goings.

FRIDAY

More than 1,000 active warrants were pursued Friday morning across suburbs and Chicago, resulting in over 50 arrests. Guns were seized, as well as cash and marijuana. It was described as the largest coordinated warrant sweep among south suburban law enforcement departments.

Orland Fire Protection District board president James Hickey said he released salary data from 2010 of all the district’s staff for research, while union vice president Walter Rafacz said personnel have earned every penny. Hickey also responded to a subtle cut at his campaign fundraising.

Operations Deputy Chief Joe Madden was let off the hook of an investigation, while he has been on paid leave. He will retire with a pension package. And two sets of bonds will be retired early, saving the district $110,000, finance director said.

Attorneys for the property are researching whether the management company that filed the initial complaint has the right to sue in Illinois.

TUESDAY

An employee at an Orland Park elder care facility told police Robert J. Phelan "engaged in inappropriate contact” with a 93-year-old woman suffering from dementia.

Between the heat wave and the intense storms the Southland has experienced this summer, the last few weeks have been busy for ComEd.

MONDAY

After 25 years at the corner of 143rd and LaGrange, the beloved supermarket shutters its doors. Patch was on hand to video the closing ceremony held at the store on its last day.
