In the Rear View: Viva La Elección, For Better or Worse

Elections took center stage again this week. But we also look back at crime, Main Street Triangle court proceedings and more.

Monday

Anyone who glimpsed the polling stations on Election Day knows it. And yet it’s a grimmer reality on paper. Only 16.3 percent of registered voters cast a ballot in Orland Park, which historically leads the way in early voting. Only 511, or about 10 percent, of all registered voters in Orland Hills came out. Candidates and those closest to them offer their thoughts.

Who’s got the best gyro around? Contributor and sports enthusiast Joe Fletcher weighs in. And so should you.

Tuesday

The election has ended, but it’s certainly not behind us. newcomer Julie Ann Craig told us she’s happy with her win but dismissed accusations of souring the non-partisan board. Check back tomorrow morning to view her completed questionnaire.

Two of Orland Township’s political bigwigs backed slates of candidates who disagreed on just about everything. We gave them an opportunity to talk about the election and the future of the community. Blue-chip Mayor Dan McLaughlin said the village has the potential to settle Orland Plaza out of court (more below). Red-skipper Cook County Commissioner Elizabeth Gorman dispelled rumors that she’s planning a run for mayor.

Wednesday

VIDEO: Palos Fire District President Asks Trustee to Resign

Orland Township isn’t the only area with a contentious fire protection district. For those who missed it: firefighters and certain board members at the Palos Fire Protection District attempted to censure one of their own. They believe he’s partly responsible for this month’s failed referendum and asked him to resign. Worth reading, no matter your address.

Thursday

Police said they had to smash the windows of a car that refused to stop and drag its driver out. He was charged with 10 offenses and accused of hitting another car and a street sign. Police suffered lacerations on their hands while restraining him.

Friday

Court proceedings were stalled again this week as attorneys waited for the appointment of a new judge. Some close to the lawsuit say the village and property owner could settle within the next week. Attorneys for the tenants say they haven’t been privileged to settlement discussions.

Christine Kelly has filed another harassment complaint against her former boss, Dawn Hamill—this one with the Orland Hills police department. Hamill denies the accusation, and says she can prove where she was that day. Kelly is expected to testify against Hamill in court regarding animal cruelty and neglect charges. Sheriff’s police raided her animal sanctuary in Tinley Park in February.
