In This Rear View: Scams, Streets, Comics and Wrestling

For the week of Feb. 20-26, we look back at a busted conman, the beginning of election fervor and cancer benefits.

Busy would be a good word for this week. Scams, SouthtownStar HQ slowly turning into Menard’s, a hit and run possibly resolved and election season arrived.

So let’s get to the Rear View from last week:

Crime

  • A man claiming to be a Marine to get money from unsuspecting Samaritans, who as a result had multiple warrants out for scamming people out of hundreds of thousands of dollars, was caught by law enforcement on Wednesday.  Police said Daniel J. Robinson, 35, was found after Orland Park police were notified that Robinson cut a bad check to repay a loan.
  • An Orland Hills woman was identified by witnesses as being responsible for a hit-and-run accident in December, when a woman was struck by a truck.  Roseanne M. Zullo, 56, was charged with failure to report an accident involving personal injury and is being held on $500,000 bond.
  • The court case for Allan Kustok, who was accused of shooting his wife Anita ‘Jeanie’ Kustok, is stalled as the prosecution gathers more evidence.
  • The Robles brothers accepted a plea for one year in prison, after they were caught last summer in the McGinnis Slough with over 2,800 marijuana plants.

Government

  • The April election is five weeks away, and candidates are gearing up for four contested races. We launched our election blog that will be updated all the way up to and past the election.
  • Plans to give 159th Street a makeover are coming ever closer to fruition, but the question is do we need it? After all, capital projects were cut to balance Orland Park’s budget for this fiscal year.
  • The SouthtownStar building could become the biggest Menard’s in the United States. Tinley Park’s economic development commission approved a $1 million sales tax sharing agreement Tuesday night.
  • Vehicle sticker fees went up, and other details from Monday’s Orland Park Village Board meeting.

Sports

  • Sandburg wrestling took third place in state on Saturday, which left them disappointed after a Herculean season. Glenbard North may have taken first, but another state trophy for Sandburg is nothing to frown upon.
  • Sandburg boys basketball continued their end-season surge, beating Joliet West over the weekend. It’s all about the zone.
  • Eagles wrestler Dan Argueta faces his next challenge: where to contine wrestling after high school.
