Pancake Breakfast, Blood Drive & Tornado Victims Collection

Orland Park Boy Scout Troop 383 is spearheading a local collection for

families affected by the November 17 tornadoes in Illinois. The troop is

coordinating its collection with the annual pancake breakfast the group is

co-hosting on November 23 with the Orland-Palos Reber-Tesmond VFW Post 2604 and
Boy Scout Troop 318.

“We wanted to
do something to help and our first thought was to go down there to help clean up
but we know that’s not possible,” said Troop 383 Senior Patrol Leader Tim Klotz.
“So, we decided to collect what they need and ask people to bring stuff to our
pancake breakfast on Saturday,” he said.

Items
requested include non-perishable food items, bottled water, large garbage bags,
work gloves, bleach, buckets, sponges, mops, towels, baby formula, infant care
items, diapers, flashlights, aspirin, batteries, manual can openers, duct tape,
matches, scissors, toilet paper, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, gas
cards, gift cards, toiletries (razors, soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, hairbrushes,
etc.)

“This is what
we do. We help where we can,” said Assistant Senior Patrol Leader Vince
Scaravalle. “These people have been through so much. If we can get everyone
who’s coming to the pancake breakfast to bring something or just stop in with
their donations, we’ll get this stuff down to them,” Scaravalle said.

"People don't
have to come to the pancake breakfast to donate," explained Troop Guide Steven
Fechtner. "They can just stop in at the Civic Center to drop stuff off if they
want. But, once they smell breakfast, they'll want to buy a ticket," he said
smiling.

The ninth
annual All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast and Blood Drive will be held November
23 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Orland Park Civic Center, 14750 South Ravinia Avenue. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for those younger than age 10. Tickets
may be purchased at the door or from any Troop 383 family. Proceeds benefit
Troops 383 and 318 and VFW Post 2604.

“We like to
work the pancake breakfast because we get to meet the vets from Hines and
Manteno that they bring in,” said Assistant Patrol Leader Colin Motzny. “They
like to talk about their time in the military and smile when we tell them about
all that we do with scouts,” he said, adding, "We do a lot with the vets and we
like to help them whenever we can."

The national
award winning Orland Park Boy Scout Troop 383 is chartered by the Village of
Orland Park Veterans Commission and will celebrate its third anniversary in
December, 2013. Its members include boys in sixth grade and into high school
with scouts from Orland Park, Tinley Park, Oak Forest and other communities.
