Firehouse Subs and Pipeline Safety

On Monday August 26th, Firehouse Subs in Orland Park hosted Enbridge Energy's training for local fire departments and first responders on pipeline safety.

The luncheon was hosted by Enbridge Energy to continue to promote public awareness about pipeline safety. The event also included training about how to respond to a pipeline emergency. The luncheon reiterated the common goal of both the fire protection industry and Enbridge: to safeguard individuals who live or work along pipelines. According to the Enbridge Energy website, safety is one of the company’s three core values.

Enbridge Energy, Limited Partnership has been in operation for more than 60 years and has had petroleum pipelines in Illinois for many years. They also have a natural gas pipeline in Joliet, Illinois. Enbridge Energy provides 13 percent of the daily crude oil import requirements in the US.

Enbridge Energy also provides regular pipeline safety education to the individuals living and working along the pipelines, excavators, farmers, school officials, emergency responders and public officials. According to their website, there are some warning signs that can alert individuals to a potential emergency. Moist patches of liquid, discolored vegetation, unusual hissing or roaring noises, or smells similar to gasoline are a few of the signs of a potential leak. The Enbridge Energy website encourages individuals to extinguish open flames, such as cigarettes, and turn off gas or diesel powered equipment. The area should be evacuated upwind to a safe location. Individuals should then first call 9-1-1, then the Enbridge toll-free emergency number if possible.

If you have any questions about pipeline safety, visit the Enbridge Energy website or contact your local fire department. Visit Firehouse Subs in Orland Park or leave a comment to tell us about your pipeline safety tips!
