Top 3 Most Commonly Asked Questions At Firehouse Subs

Firehouse Subs in Orland Park is more than just a (fantastic) sub shop. We’re building a community of strong supporters and eaters. And we’ve noticed that there are a few key questions asked several times a day, so we thought we’d help clear up the confusion by providing some information!

What is a pickle bucket?

We serve a juicy pickle spear with each of our sandwiches, and the overwhelming support from the community means that we go through a lot of pickles! The bright red buckets you see next to the chip stands are the buckets pickles are shipped in. Yes, we know they are huge-- they feel even larger when packed to the brim with dozens of pounds of pickles! We wash them out and sell them for $2, which goes to our Public Safety Foundation. They’re very handy to have around the house: they’re great for washing cars, storing items in a garage or helping with any other household tasks. Plus, we think they’re rather stylish because like everything else in our store they are fire engine red and feature the Firehouse Subs logo.

Are the owners firemen?

William and Christine Vanderbilt, owners of the Firehouse Subs in Orland Park location, are not firemen, but the franchise was started by firemen. The co-founders, Chris Sorensen & Robin Sorensen, began the chain 18 years ago. Originating in Florida, the brand has been expanding into more than 600 restaurants in 35 states, all consistent with the firehouse theme. And although the Vanderbilts weren’t firefighters themselves, they have the utmost appreciation for the men and women who have served. That’s why in addition to the donations made through the Public Safety Foundation, they also give current and former firefighters free drinks to thank them for their service!

What’s your favorite sandwich?

There are so many tempting choices at Firehouse Subs in Orland Park that customers often have to ask our opinion. Right now, there is a tie at our store for the most popular sandwich: the #4 (the Italian sub) or the #10 (the Beef and Cheddar Brisket). William always tells inquirers that he thinks any choice is a great choice, although he’s a little biased because he thinks all of the subs are delicious! Other customer favorites include the Firehouse Hero and the Turkey Bacon Ranch. And let’s not forget our signature sub, the Hook & Ladder!
