Scout Built Fire Memorial for Eagle Project

Kyle LaHucik designed a memorial for fallen firefighters that was built at the Orland Fire Protection District Administrative Offices, and will be dedicated on Saturday.

Kyle LaHucik wanted to honor local firefighters for his Eagle Scout project.

The Carl Sandburg High School junior from Orland Park is a member of Boy Scout Troop 725 in Mokena and is a candidate for Eagle Scout.

He decided to build the memorial at the Orland Fire Protection District’s Administrative Office, so firefighters from around the area would be able to see it.

The memorial includes a mailbox for retired American flags, a flagpole and a stone plaque that reads “Always Remember-Never Forget.”

Area Landscaping assisted with supplies, and his fellow scouts helped build the memorial.

LaHucik’s memorial will be dedicated 8 a.m. Saturday at the northeast corner of the OFPD Administrative Office, 9790 W. 151st St.

Engineer Ray Marquardt, who also is a scoutmaster with Troop 725, will be participating. His father, Lt. Raymond Marquardt, also served with the Orland district and passed away from a line-of-duty illness on Sept. 14, 2009.
