Kohl's Joins Retailers Open on Thanksgiving Day

Kohl's has joined a growing list of retailers who have decided to open for early holiday sales, at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.

Macy's announced earlier this month that its retail stores also will open at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving

The competition for retail dollars is heating up. The trend to open on Thanksgiving night actually began two years ago, when Toys 'R Us opened at 9 p.m., according to U.S.A. Today. Last year, Target, Sears, Kmart and Walmart opened at either 8 or 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving, according to the article.

Kohl's, based in Menomonee Fall, Wisc., will be open for 28 hours straight, from 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 28, through midnight Friday nationwide, according to a press release. The Orland Park Kohl's is located at 3 Orland Park Place.

“Shopping over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend has become a much-anticipated tradition enjoyed with friends and family,” said Kohl's Chief Customer Officer Michelle Gass in a prepared statement. “As many customers are eager to get a jump start on their shopping, we are opening our stores at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day as a convenience to our customers who want to make Kohl’s their first stop.”

Not everyone is happy about the trend, however. A Facebook page titled "Say No to Shopping on Thanksgiving" had more than 15,431 "likes" as of Wednesday, Oct. 23.
