Off-Duty Nurse and Podiatrist Fiancé Save Boy's Life

A 16-year-old Midlothian boy was dining at Houlihan's in Orland Park when his lungs and heart suddenly stopped working.

A local off-duty nurse and her podiatrist boyfriend's quick thinking saved a Midlothian boy's life Sunday night, reports CBS News.

Nick Theilgaard, 16, was dining outdoors at Houlihan's restaurant in Orland Park when his rare heart condition caused his heart and lungs to stop working.

“I took a drink of some water, I put it down, and I started feeling weird, and that’s the last I remembered,” Theilgaard told CBS News.

Theilgaard's head fell back, his eyes began rolling and he began making a gurgling noise, his mother told CBS. A witness ran into the restaurant and shouted for help. That's when Sarah Kane, a pediatric cardiac nurse practitioner at Advocate Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn, and her podiatrist fiancé Brian Wittmayer sprung into action.

The two ran out and began performing CPR on Thielgaard. They then continued for 10 minutes until paramedics arrived with a defibrillator and resuscitated Thielgaard.

Doctors plan to help Thielgaard avoid a future attack by installing a  subcutaneous implantable defibrillator in his body next month.
