Brother Rice Teacher’s Death is Homicide: Coroner

The death of a longtime Brother Rice teacher was ruled a homicide Wednesday afternoon following an autopsy by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Al Filan’s death was caused by “multiple stab and incise wounds,” according to the medical examiner’s office.

The Orland Park Police Department and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force are investigating the case.  No suspects have been arrested as of Wednesday night, and investigators remained at Filan's house and gathered at the Orland Park Police Department.

Police were called to Filan’s residence in the 9400 block of Georgetown Square Tuesday around 10:35 a.m. for a well-being check, after Filan didn’t come to Brother Rice for work Tuesday morning. Once there, officers found him lying on the kitchen floor, according to police.

Police said in a statement Wednesday afternoon that there is no reason to believe there is an immediate threat to the local community.

Filan worked at Brother Rice for over 39 years. During that time he taught business and served as the business department chairman. He also served as a girls soccer coach at Victor J. Andrew High School.

Filan was described having "touched the lives of thousands of students, colleagues and family members; he will be fondly missed," on the Brother Rice website.
