One woman was taken to an area hospital for treatment Thursday afternoon after a midsized SUV drove into the Orland Park Post Office at 9500 W. 144th Pl.

The Orland Fire Protection District was called about a vehicle accident at the post office at 1:09 p.m., according to Orland Fire Battalion Chief William Bonnar Jr. Responding emergency personnel found the SUV had driven through the front windows of the post office, according to Bonnar. The driver hit the wrong pedal while breaking, according to Orland Park Police Lt. Tim McCormick.

One woman, who was in the lobby at the time, was injured and taken to an area hospital for treatment.

“She was talking to everyone before she was transported,” Bonnar said, regarding the woman’s condition.

The driver of the SUV refused treatment at the scene. Another person in the lobby also refused treatment.

“The structure is still sound, but there is a lot of glass to clean up,” Bonnar said. “The building will have to be boarded up.”

The post office will be closed for the rest of the day Thursday. Whether it will reopen tomorrow has not been decided as of 2:45 p.m. Thursday.

People in need of postal services should visit the office at 15128 S. LaGrange Road, which is open until 6 p.m. Thursday.

A similar crash for the same reason happened almost exactly one year ago at the same post office.
