Driver Cited in Pedestrian Crash on 80th Avenue

A 26-year-old Tinley Park man was hospitalized in serious condition after he was hit by a car early Sunday morning, Orland Park police said.

The 26-year-old Tinley Park driver who struck a man early Sunday morning has been cited by Orland Park police.

Police said the injured man, who also is 26 years old and from Tinley Park, was hospitalized in serious condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The man was struck by a 2001 Nissan Ultima just before 5:11 a.m. Sunday in the 15500 block of 80th Avenue.

The driver, who was cited for failing to avoid a crash, told police he did not see the man crossing the street or walking in the roadway, said Orland Park Police Commander John Keating.

"But he did hear someone strike his vehicle," Keating said. The driver heard a loud boom or banging sound, stopped the car and called 911.

A witness, who was in another vehicle about 3 cars away during the incident, also reportedly did not see anyone crossing the road or walking in the street.

Officers are in contact with the victim's family but have yet to speak with him, police said.

The crash remains under investigation as an accident reconstruction team pieces together what happened before making a final recommendation on any possible additional charges.
