Orland Fire Board President to Host Fundraiser, Looking for Sponsorships up to $3,000

James Hickey said he hasn't ruled out the possibility of running for higher office once his seat expires in 2015.

Orland Fire Protection District Board President James Hickey and friends are hosting a fundraiser July 28 at , with proceeds going toward Hickey’s campaign fund.

An electronic flier for the event calls upon all red-white-and-blue-blooded locals to join “in Honoring The New President of the Board.”

Hickey said this will be the second fundraiser he has held in his name. Public records show that Orland Professional Firefighters Local 2754 donated $1,600 to his campaign in 1999 and another $1,600 in 2009. Other contributors over the years include Coach's Corner in Orland Park and Office Max in Orland Hills.

Tickets for this fundraiser are $50 individually and $75 per couple. Sponsorships for the event, ranging from $500 to $3,000, can be purchased ahead of time. They carry with them such patriot-themed titles as “Son’s of Liberty” and “Stars and Stripes."

More than once, Hickey has compared his actions to those of this nation’s forebears. He and trustees Christopher Evoy and Blair Rhode have declared financial transparency and budget cuts their mandate, often at the entreaty of other board members.

“I see us as rebuilding the fire district just like how America reinvented itself,” Hickey said.

His seat expires in 2015.

“If I’m still needed to make changes at that time, I will stay on board,” Hickey said. Otherwise, he would consider running for a higher office, he said, though it's too early to decide on which.

“A lot depends on if I prove myself and prove to taxpayers that I can get the job done that they want to have done,” he continued. “But you never close any doors, and you take one day at a time.”

Of course you are again being dishonest. The voter turnout int he last election was huge compared to the same period four years earlier. Secondly, your name calling is typical of someone who simply wishes to distract voters. Your attacks only undermine your opinions and expose them as merely being political. Thank you for that. Of course, it goes without saying that anonymous attacks are at best skeptical. Your views mean very little since you lack the courage to publicly identify yourself and expose your real selfish interests in this discussion. Who's paying your salary ... and I am certain you are making far more in the district than I am. : )
OP Resident July 8, 2011 at 08:17 pm
STOP MAKING A FOOL OF YOURSELF AND THE DEPARTMENT IN THIS FORUM. SPREAD YOUR PROPAGANDA TO THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY IN THE PRESS SO THEY CAN SEE YOU FOR WHAT YOU REALLY ARE .. A HYPOCRIT. UNTIL YOU STARTED GETTING PAID BY THE FIRE DISTRICT YOU HAD NOTHING GOOD TO SAY ABOUT ANYONE AFFILIATED WITH THE ORGANIZATION. NOW THAT YOUR ROBBING THE TAXPAYERS AT A RATE OF $3000/ MONTH YOUR OPINION OF THE DEPARTMENT HAS TAKEN A FULL 180 AND LIFE IS WONDERFUL. I KNOW, YOU'LL SAY IT'S BECAUSETHE NEW BOARD HAS CHANGED YOUR OPINION ABOUT THE FIRE DISTRICT BUT MY GUESS IS THAT YOU CHANGED YOUR TUNE BECAUSE OF THAT FAT $3000/MONTH CHECK YOU NOW GET FOR DOING NOTHING PRODUCTIVE. IF YOU ARE GETTING PAING TO PUT A GOOD FACE ON THE FIRE DISTRICT THE RESIDENTS OF ORLAND NEED TO DEMAND A REFUND ON THE TAX MONEY THAT'S GOING TO PAY YOUR SALARY.

Zinedine and OP Resident are probably the same person. Slandering everyone, unable to address issues, and accusing people of crimes -- which only shows that they have no real issues, only hatred and namecalling. Their past references to my race (which they now pretend they didn't do) is only the tip of the iceberg reflecting their poor civility, lack of candor and tragic failures which are unrepresentative of the district. Keep writing ... it only proves my points.

Correction - not everyone is against Ray. I have a great deal of respect for Ray. Among many other things, he uses proper grammar, spelling and capitalization. That alone is more than the real *idiots* posting here can say.
Sue N. July 9, 2011 at 12:41 pm
Ray Hanania - I have no comment on all the other accusatory posts going on back and forth here. But I do need to point out that your comment about the last election's voter turnout being huge compared to 4 years ago is not accurate. As a former election judge, I pay very close attention to voter turn out. Not only by my count, but even according to the County Clerk and news reports, this last election was historically one of the lowest in voter turnout in years, and this included being lower then 4 years ago. Especially in Orland Park. I was never so disappointed in how many more Orland Park registered voters decided to skip voting in this last one. Thanks

Sue, do not listen to "Spike" or ZineDine. Their candidates lost to candidates concerned about spending. They can't get their facts right. So here they are:
The April 2011 election WAS the lowest voter turnout in COOK COUNTY history ... but NOT in Orland Park and NOT in the Orland Fire Protection District. Do I have to do all the work (like when Spike and Zinedine, in their racist campaign against me, falsely alleged that no two members of the OFPD board can meet together to discuss legislation -- really the dumbest comments I have ever read)? Here are some FACTS folks: In the April 2007 election Blair Rhode received 3,347 votes and Chris Evoy received 3,483 votes. "Bob" received 2,350 votes. More than 6,200 votes were cast for five candidates. In the Village trustee race (non-mayoral race) that same election, Schussler got the highest vote with 2,616 votes cast in a field of 9 candidates and about 6,000 votes cast. NOW, compare that to four years earlier (off-year equivalent election), in the OFPD District the winning candidates Marty McGill got 2,603 votes and Glenn Mihalek got 2,695 votes, which were almost 1,000 votes less than Rhode and Evoy got. About 4,700 votes were cast in that election. In the village election (again, non-mayoral race) Bernie Murphy got 3,492 votes of a total of 4,120 votes cast. Seriously, people should be wary of anything "Spike" or Zinedine or any of their cronies claim on this board because they can't get their facts right.

The BOND renewal. This should be illegal. Telling voters that they approved a bond issue to buy more fire engines, a training center, and the new meeting building when in fact none of these were mentioned in the original bond issue is deceptive politics. Only self serving individuals act on this type of spending while placing faith in the fact that most residents don't know any better. Renewing the bond was done by the Board of Trustees not the voters. Who got the tab? Who profit from this crafty underhanded spending? The union contractors that contribute to political campaigns? An instant increase in property taxes that no one asked for. I can't wait to read the union contract for the fire union. I see $$$$$$$$ in savings real soon.
Spike July 9, 2011 at 11:19 pm
You notice "OFPD Communications" Ray Hanania never answered when the Board of Trustees approved in an open meeting the hiring of Katsenas for $500 per week. Instead he attacks the taxpayers with his vicious attacks of phony racism charges.
Ray Hanania is a POOR use of taxpayer dollars...as usual
Robert July 10, 2011 at 02:56 am
Your title is PFPD Communications????? I thought you were the PR for Evoy,Rhodes and Hickey because when you make up a quote like
"against the wishes of." you identify your bias. The majority of the people in orland park do not agree with the mandates of James Hickey, Dr. Rhodes and Evoy. 86% of the Praire readers voted against the actions of these three men who have dominated the board. We are against the hiring of all their realestate friends and Liz Gormans personal connections. I for one do not agree with the hiring of you Mr. Hanania. I believe that you were hired to slant and cover up the on goings of your friends, Evoy-n-Rhaodes-n-Hickey.
Robert July 10, 2011 at 03:00 am
Ray Hanania is accusing a citizen of unsubstantiated racism : Ray said "No SPike, your racist attacks against me ".
Wow, here we go, the "PR" firm playing the race card. What an ebarassment to our city.
Robert July 10, 2011 at 03:04 am
I agree with you Spike. The Republicans are using the citizen's Fire Department and public safety as their little Liz Gorman run political arm. Their disguise of "saving the tax payers money" is a farce and I feel we the public are in jepardy with these incompetent 3 looking to advance themselves in the "political world".
Hickey is a grandiose fool. I thought the fund raiser was going to be for some charity, not HIMSELF! But this is all about himself.
Robert July 10, 2011 at 03:06 am
I second that.
Robert July 10, 2011 at 03:11 am
Hickey came to his mandating power by 6% of the Orland Park Residents. Residents are going to suffer for not coming out and voting. I cannot believe you are working for me, a taxpayers. I am very unhappy that the czars hired you. You are very opinionated, bias and well not very nice in my opinion based on your posts.
Robert July 10, 2011 at 03:13 am
How do you feel about those that Down Syndrome, MR, disabilities, handicaps, lesser IQ than someone of your stature? Are they "idiots" in your opinion?
MS July 10, 2011 at 03:41 am
Ray, as a spokesperson for the Fire District, you can't be doing this. You were hired to talk about the Fire District and its policies ONLY. All I hear from you is a constant defense of a set of Board Members-- not all the Board Members or even the Board as an official body. On top of this, instead of explaining policies to the community as a spokesman of the district, you are telling people not to listen to other members of the public, calling them "liars" because their facts are not the same as yours.
As an official of the District, you SHOULD NOT be doing ANY OF THIS on this website or on yours. It's a conflict of interest and it's using inappropriate channels to communicate. If you have something to announce to the community, make a press release. Whatever Spike says, or whoever, as a spokesman you CANNOT call them liars. You are a public servant and you are to RESPECT the opinions of the public, anonymous or otherwise. Your job is to speak for the District on its policies and practices, in a NON-PARTISAN manner. Your job is not to defend the past election. By doing so, you raise the specter that you are politically appointed. Public servants are supposed to be non-partisan and professional. You have acted entirely unprofessional.
MS July 10, 2011 at 04:02 am
P.S. You are a resident of Orland but you do not have the right to comment. By working as a spokesman for the District you have forfeited your right to comment on its policies as a resident. One mouth cannot be saying two different things. It's inherently wrong and raises questions about your ability to keep politics or personal matters out of your job. When you do comment it undermines your position as spokesman and shows you are politically motivated in a position that should be non-partisan. If you want to comment, resign as PR specialist for the District and get hired by Evoy and Rhode's political party because its plain you are in their camp. Don't do this on the taxpayer's dime.
Zinedine July 10, 2011 at 04:34 am
That was stated very nicely, I have stated that fact also but now I am called a racist and a Liar. I have not made one comment about his race because I am of the same race. Wow looks like Ray is not that bright after all. I have not lied on this blog and I don't really care who is in charge, but it is politics we are discussing and he does not think it is. You can tell his agenda and it is being bought by the Gorman's. He has not released anything of use to the residents of the fire district that the one of the chiefs could do. This would save money of the tax payer and why is Paul not complaining about that? Is Paul a plant to create B.S. rants so the Gormans can come in an claim they cleaned the district up? Lastly Paul the bond did go to the voters and they voted overwhelmingly for it. Now who is not telling the truth, Ray are you going to call Paul a Liar, and I did not say anything about the last election you are creating your own words. Those are not mine your writing and its easy to check go read my comments. I am sorry if I am not educated enough to write on here for some, but if you don't like it, don't read it.
Zinedine July 10, 2011 at 05:05 am
Wow, Everything Ray writes is racism here are more examples. So why was it okay to raise the debt when Bush was in power but not okay to raise the debt when Obama is in power? Because of racism in this country.
Ikhras has been attacking me by publishing false quotes, taking sentences out of context and accusing me of being "anti-Muslim" even though I have spent my life defending Muslims because most Americans believe I am Muslim. They have made up false claims, few are creative or imaginative but driven by racist hatred. They have launched this hate campaign because they can't handle the issues I address, so instead of addressing the issues, they attack me. It is typical of racist hate sites that can't deal with issues so they have to attack the individual. They ARE racist and I won't even put that in quotes it is so obvious. The Tea Party movement has many members who are driven by racial hatred, stereotyping and extremism and the Tea Party has done little to denounce it. Sound familiar anyone?
Zinedine July 10, 2011 at 05:09 am
Continued
You didn’t misread anything. It’s the same question because Hollywood is the capitol of Western racism and bigotry. Even in many Third World countries, Hollywood films are allowed to reinforce stereotypes, forcing victims to accept the racism in the world around them. Opposition to Muslims and mosques grow in US racist caldron By Ray Hanania Americans have always opposed Muslims, but the opposition started to increase in the 1990s as Muslim immigration to the country began to increase. It came out of the closet after Sept. 11, 2001, when Americans blamed Muslims for the terrorist attacks (ray it was Muslims who declared war on AMERICA on September 11, 2001, It was not caused by any other religion.) Too many Americans on Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites are using the bin Laden killing as an excuse to vent their racist hatred of Muslims and Arabs. You see everything he writes against is a racist. When he is fired from the fire district it will be racism. This man is a horrible person and I am embarrassed by what he writes. For the record don't ever call me a racist again without proof.
Robert July 10, 2011 at 10:51 am
It appears that Hickey, Rhoades and Evoy are bilking taxpayers money for their own private PR firm. You heard Hickey, he is raising money for some other political seat in the future. He is raising money by throwing a bar party. I hope no one at his party is DUI in our community.
Robert July 10, 2011 at 11:21 am
"This lawsuit is frivolous and absolutely without merit," pronounced the Sun-Times. Ray Hanania has accused the paper where he used to work of defaming his character.
On November 1 Hanania was called in by Dennis Britton, editor of the Sun-Times, and Steve Huntley, the metro editor. They questioned his relationship with city treasurer Miriam Santos, a relationship once torrid and even now disconcertingly chummy. Hanania was a political reporter, assigned to the county beat; Hanania has a reputation, he has sued others.... why is he working for OUR ORLAND PARK FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT???????
Ray Hanania July 10, 2011 at 03:38 pm
I LOVE that Spike and his minions can't answer the accurate facts I spelled out:
1 - The assertion that the last election was the lowest turnout is wrong. So the new board DOES have a clear mandate from the voters 2 - The false claim that the board members violate the Il Open Meetings Act. Wrong again on their part. 3 - That the only thing Spike and his minions can do is call me names, which reflects the real lack of ethics on their part and the weak foundation of their arguments. All they can do is grab a sentence here, or there and take things out of context to justify their racist attacks. And of course, they can only do it anonymously because their lies have no foundation in truth. No wonder they are so angry and hateful. I don't mind them trying to make me the issue because it shows that what the new board led by Hickey, Evoy and Rhode are doing has hit the nail on the head.
Ray Hanania July 10, 2011 at 11:53 pm
That I am a Christian Arab seems to really bother you. That's your sad problem "Zinedine" : ) ... the facts are clear and anyone can read what you have written, and the facts I have offered about the last election -- which you got wrong, and more. You can't argue the facts. You can only attack me personally. But your personal attacks, and libels, really mean nothing to this argument. The Orland Fire Protection District is improving and getting stronger and the new board is leading the way. It is also amazing how many firefighters support these changes. They want a stronger board that is more open with the public. That's what the board is doing. And they are doing the right thing. Your incoherent ramblings are kind of sad, and reflect directly on you.
Zinedine July 11, 2011 at 04:00 am
Ray, I don't care what you are, You are the only one who brings it up. First I guess I have to slow things down for you because you do not comprehend very well. I said the BOND referendum passed by more votes. What this means is a higher majority of the voters wanted this than the majority of those in this election. I also was quoting you and your racist speech. I guess I am really getting to you and well you are going to do something stupid real soon and get fired because you are impulsive and think its all about you. Well son it is not and you just don't get it. Please tell me where it bothers me that you are a christian Arab. Please help me understand how I even said anything remotely to this. ahhhh, now I understand, if you are getting it handed to you and you have nothing to say, you will use the race card or the religion card. Now we all see what you are.
Ray you need to resign this blog just proves your racist hatred to people that are different than you or disagree with you.
John Paul July 11, 2011 at 05:54 am
Did I miss something?
I keep seeing these charges of racism pertaining to comments about the Fire District. If I'm not mistaken, the chief is white. The former chief and assistant were also white. All five members of the Board of Trustees are white. Most, if not all of the officers are white. Most of the firefighters are white. The commenters appear to be white. White people can't be racist against other whites, can they?
Ray Hanania July 11, 2011 at 10:38 am
Hey John ... I think that Zinedine and Spike are focused on the fact that I am Middle Eastern (Christian Palestinians; my wife coincidentally, is Jewish). Zinedine is "quoting" from an anti-Jewish hate web site called Ikhras which targets me because I am Christian Arab (he references them above). Ikhras hates Jews and any Arabs who support peace with Israel (like me). That's what Zinedine does. Look at his language "Christian Zionist Palesitnian" ... etc ... the writer has serious issues. But it all goes back to Spike who felt it was important to bring up my background. That I write a column for the Jerusalem Post (A Jewish newspaper) advocating compromise and peace and that I take on the extremists who hate America seems to have escaped Zinedine for some coincidental reason : ) ... but I am used to the pro-Bin Laden groups in the Middle East attacking me so I always wonder about anonymous posters who think that the issues have anything to do with the taxpayer's interests in Orland Park and the recent election (which neither Spike nor Zinedine want to accurately depict).
OP Resident July 12, 2011 at 07:28 pm
Ray,
I am not being racist or rude when I say that you are the only one who has a problem with ryour ace. You are the only one on this blog who is focusing on your ethnic background abd you throw out the race card whenever you can't answer a question or need to take the focus off this flawed fire district board. Seriously, no one cares about your race What we care about is honest, factual and unbiased reporting and we are not getting that from you. You have turned this conversation about the fire district into an extension of your Orland Parker blog site and only talk about how the bloggers are being prejudice against you because of your Christian Palestinian background. Honestly, no one but you cares about what race your are. We care about the fire district and the way it is being mismanaged. Is it your job to keep the residents of Orland Park focused on your racial issues instead of what's happpening in the district? If that's not what your up to and you're sincerely paranoid that people are after you because of your race than maybe you should seek professional help.
Ben Feldheim (Editor) July 12, 2011 at 08:50 pm
Ok folks, I think that's enough. If anyone has any comments to make that actually relate to the article, you have until 6 p.m. tonight to do so and then comments will be closed. If anything is posted from here on that doesn't relate to the article, it will be removed.
You all have the ability to express your feelings and opinions without resorting to petty insults and thin accusations, and I've seen this from both sides. You all can and should do better.
MS July 12, 2011 at 09:52 pm
Ben, I think there is a story in this. Some investigative journalism would work. Could you do a piece about the fire district's spokesman? I mean the conduct on these boards has been atrocious and unprofessional. As the mouthpiece of the district, the spokesman has not been germane to any fire district issue. He just supports political personalities the whole time. Is this apropriate use of taxpayer dollars? What is his actual role, here? Come on, the Tribune and the Sun Times do this sort of thing all the time in Chicago... shoot WGN even did a story on the Mayor of Country Club Hills a few weeks ago because what he was doing was not germane to his duties. And the spokesman here seems to be a lightning rod of controversy too (past and present).
