Orland Park Man Accused of Carjacking 88-Year-Old Woman

With help from Chicago residents and witnesses, the man thought to be responsible for stealing an elderly woman's car was found and arrested.

An Orland Park man is facing three felony charges against him, after he was accused of stealing an 88-year old woman’s purse and car and kicking her in the process.

Peter Sousan, 24, is charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking (Class X felony), aggravated battery (Class 2 felony) and robbery (Class 1 felony).

On July 30, an 88-year-old woman parked her car at Walgreen’s at 80th Avenue and 159th Street, and walked to the store entrance when a white man started running toward her around 2:20 p.m., according to the . The man grabbed her purse and car keys, , before driving away north on 80th Avenue, police said.

With witness descriptions, and details from past similar crimes, Orland Park detectives developed Sousan as a suspect, including a positive ID of him in a photograph by a witness, according to a release from the police department.

On Friday, the Chicago Police Department found the woman’s car parked in the 700 block of North Lawndale Avenue, north of Garfield Park, around 1 a.m., according to the release. Orland Park police alerted area residents to watch for Sousan.
About 36 hours later, police were called by residents about a man matching Sousan’s description walking in the area and Chicago officers apprehended him, police said.

The victim and two witnesses identified Sousan as the man responsible for the incident, once he was brought back to Orland Park, police said.

Orland Park Police Commander John Keating credits the witnesses, residents in the North Lawndale area and Chicago Police’s 11th District officers for help in capturing the suspect.

Sousan has prior car thefts on record, but not carjackings, Keating said in an email.

Sousan is expected to be in court Monday morning for a bond hearing at the Bridgeview Courthouse.
