Orland Park Man Charged with DUI after Crashing into Plush Horse

The man hit two other cars before driving into the ice cream store, police said.

An Orland Park man had a blood alcohol content more than three times the legal limit when he crashed his car into an ice cream parlor in Palos Park Saturday night, police said. 

John P. Kelsey, 28, hit two cars before ramming into the side of Plush Horse Ice Cream Shoppe, 12301 86th Ave. 

The shop had just closed for the evening and only staff remained, police said. No one was injured.

The building had extensive damage and a portion had to be boarded up. It is unable to be used by the business. 

Police said the vehicle was headed south on 86th, just south of 123rd, when the driver lost control, hit two vehicles and then veered east and struck the building.

Kelsey was charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving, and exceeding the legal blood alcohol level of .08 by three times. Kelsey is in police custody pending a bond hearing.

"If this incident had happened two hours earlier, it would have been catastrophic," police said in a release.  "The Plush Horse courtyard would have been packed with families and children enjoying their ice cream."
