Orland Park Police Blotter: Fake Check, Public Urinating and Boots for Walking

FRIDAY, FEB. 17

Boots Walk

Police were called about a retail theft at Sears in Orland Square Mall around 7 p.m. Store security said a man was seen putting on work boots and placing his shoes in the boots box, before leaving the store without paying for the boots, according to the report. The boots are worth $135. Michael L. Shankman, 34, of the 8800 block of Carnoustie Drive in Orland Park, was charged with retail theft.

Theft to Warrant Arrest

Police were called about a retail theft in Kohl’s around 4:30 p.m. Store security said a man was seen entering a dressing room with a pair of jeans and a pair of sweatpants, and then leaving the room with just the jeans, according to the report. A woman was then seen approaching the man, who then tore tags off a wallet before handing it to the man, and he placed the wallet in his pocket, police said. They both left the store after only paying for the pair of jeans and were stopped by security, who found the sweatpants under his jeans, police said. Officers later found an arrest warrant for the woman, and she admitted to having marijuana on her, according to the report. Raymond D. Nelson, 23, of the 5000 block of West 159th Street in Oak Forest, was charged with retail theft. Cassie L. Mendoza, 19, of the 5000 block of West 159th Street in Oak Forest, was arrested on a warrant for disorderly conduct and charged with possession of marijuana.

Not a Bathroom

An officer saw a man urinating in a parking lot in the 7900 block of West 159th Street around 1:55 a.m. The man was cited with disorderly conduct for the public urinating, police said. A warrant was found for another man who was with the urinating man, according to the report. William A. Jacob, 33, of the 5100 block of Aldersyde Road in Oak Forest, was arrested on a bond forfeiture warrant for driving with a suspended license. Anthony R. Horvath, 30, of the 14000 block of Chestnut Lane in Orland Park, was cited with disorderly conduct.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 15

Wrong Card

Police pulled behind a vehicle after seeing it stop for several moments at an intersection, then driving away slowly, turning without signaling and parking behind a closed business in the 11300 block of Southwest Highway around 1:25 a.m. The driver’s breath smelled like alcohol, he failed field sobriety tests and kept handing officers a business card instead of his driver’s license, police said.  Paul A. Frankowski, 48, of the 700 block of Sojourn Road in New Lenox, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to signal, driving without a license in possession and failure to notify the Secretary of State of an address change.

MONDAY, FEB. 13

Fake Check

Police were called about a possible fake check being used for a purchase at HHGregg, 1385 Orland Park Place, around 6:25 p.m. A store employee believed a check used to be fraudulent, and the woman who wrote the check was the subject of a warning two days earlier about fake checks, according to the report.  The woman wrote a check for $359.59 for a 32-inch television, and put down a disconnected Verizon phone number for identifying purposes, police said. The woman later said she was given the checks by a person who assured she wouldn’t get in trouble, would pay her $200 for buying the TV, and that she was trying to get money to cover needs for her two young children, according to the report. Marcia M. Hill, 20, of the 7800 block of Muskegon Avenue in Chicago, was charged with deceptive practice.

SUNDAY, FEB. 12

Start, Stop

Police saw a parked vehicle with its lights on, and a man leaving the car, in the 9100 block of Orland Court around 4:10 a.m. The officer then saw the car driving away from the area, and the driver jumped out of the car when the officer pulled it over, police said. The driver’s breath smelled like alcohol and he failed field sobriety tests, police said. Bryan E. Novak, 26, of the 300 block of Miami Street in Park Forest, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence with a blood-alcohol level greater than .08 and failure to signal.
