Orland Park Police Blotter: Getaway Car Crash, Retail Thefts Around Christmas

THURSDAY, JAN. 5

Getaway Crash

Police were called about a retail theft at Macy’s at an undisclosed time. Security recognized a man from a past retail theft, who left the store and got into an SUV before driving away, according to the report. The SUV crashed into a parked car while police were making a traffic stop on the vehicle, police said. Police found $170 worth of items from Macy’s in the SUV that were not paid for, according to the report. The driver, Joseph S. Nuttal, 32, of the 7200 block of South Vernon Avenue in Chicago, was charged with reckless driving, fleeing police, driving an uninsured vehicle and leaving the scene of a property damage accident. Michael D. Wafford, 45, of the 8600 block of South Elizabeth Street in Chicago, was charged with felony retail theft and obstructing identification.

Warrant Arrest

Police were called about a road rage argument between the driver and passenger of one car and the driver of a white Pontiac, around 3 p.m. near 143rd Street and Wolf Road. While investigating, police found an active warrant for the white Pontiac driver, according to the report. Jason A. Burt, 30, of the 15300 block of Meadow Lane in Dolton, was arrested on a Will County failure-to-appear warrant for driving with a suspended license.

Marijuana Found

Police were driving a woman to the to arrange for a ride home, when an officer noticed a white car closely following a squad car into the station parking lot around 10:50 p.m. The officer turned on warning lights and pulled up behind the car after two men left the car in an abrupt manner, according to the report. The officer smelled marijuana on one of the men, and later found a container of marijuana as well as a glass pipe in the car, police said. Martin S. Pawlak, 22, of the 13500 block of 88th Avenue in Orland Park, was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

FRIDAY, DEC. 23

Vest Ruse

Police were called to Carson Pirie Scott about a retail theft around 5:50 p.m. Security said a man was seen taking sales tags off a vest, and putting the vest on before leaving the store without paying, police said. The item is worth $157.50. Edwin Pena, 18, of the 4000 block of South Montgomery Avenue in Chicago, was cited with retail theft.

Near Barrier Strike

Police pulled over an SUV after seeing it weave between lanes and almost strike a concrete barrier while making an illegal left turn, around 2 a.m. in the 14700 block of LaGrange Road. The driver’s breath smelled like alcohol but he refused to perform field sobriety tests, police said. Scott W. Reynolds, 44, of the 10000 block of 151st Street in Orland Park, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and disobeying a traffic control device.

THURSDAY, DEC. 22

Disappearing Watch

Police were called about a retail theft at Sears in Orland Square Mall around 5:45 p.m. Security said a woman was seeing taking a watch with her into a dressing room and left the room without the watch in plain sight, according to the report. She then paid for other items and left the store without paying for the watch, police said. The watch is worth $20. Osasu Idehen, 23, of the 600 block of Cassandra Lane in University Park, was cited with retail theft.

Hidden Earrings

Police were called about a retail theft at Icing around 6:15 p.m. Security said a woman was seen taking pairs of earrings off backings and putting them in her pocket, while cupping one pair in her hands, before leaving the store without paying for the items, police said. The six pairs of earrings found are worth $45. Stacie Holloway, 37, of the 14400 block of Kedvale Street in Midlothian, was charged with retail theft.
