Orland Park Police SUV Struck on 80th and Wheeler

The police SUV was struck from behind by an elderly Tinley Park man, while on 80th Avenue just after noon on Wednesday.

An accident between an elderly Tinley Park man and an Orland Park Police Department SUV stopped traffic briefly Wednesday afternoon at the 80th Avenue and Wheeler Drive intersection.

A fully marked Orland Park Police Department SUV was stopped at a red light facing north on 80th Avenue at Wheeler Drive, when it was struck from behind around noon, according to a release from the department. The impact, caused by a 2003 Mercury Marquis sedan also driving north on 80th, pushed the SUV into the intersection, police said.

A 70-year-old Tinley Park man was driving the Mercury and an on-duty Orland Park police sergeant was driving the SUV, according to the release.

Both drivers were taken to Palos Community Hospital for non-life threatening injuries, and no charges have been filed as of 1 p.m. Wednesday.

The northbound lanes of 80th Avenue at 157th Street were closed briefly until the vehicle were towed, according to police.
