Orland Park police reports: April 3-23

SATURDAY, APRIL 23

Retail Theft

Police were called about a retail theft at Orland Square Mall around 5:30 p.m. Security said a woman was seen taking a box containing earrings from a display and placing it into a cookie bag she was carrying. Vinci J. Taylor, 18, of the 10100 block of South Eberhart Avenue in Chicago, was cited with retail theft.

Hat Shelter

Police were called about two men being held for retail theft at Orland Square Mall around 6 p.m. Security told police that one of the men was seen handing baseball hats to the other, and the other man put them under his sweatshirt. Max A. Winkleman, 18, of the 15300 block of Treetop Drive in Orland Park, and Christopher J. Lovings, 18, of the 1400 block of 119th Street in Whiting, Ind., were each cited with retail theft.

False Return

Police were called about a false return at a department store in Orland Square Mall around 3:30 p.m. Security said two men went into the store empty-handed, took a rotisserie cooker and microwave worth a total of $404.20 and brought them to a register, police said. One man walked away, while the other told the cashier he wanted to return the items, but had no receipt, and was given a voucher for the cost of the two, police said. Andre E. Jones, 43, of the 700 block of 65th Street in Chicago, was charged with retail theft.

Hidden Polos

Police were called to a department store in Orland Square Mall about a retail theft around 5:15 p.m. Security said a man was seen with two polo shirts in his hands walk into a dressing room and then exit without the shirts. The man then left the store, and security found he was wearing the shirts under his own clothes, according to the report. The shirts are worth $140. Darrell D. Holmes, 18, of the 13000 block of Wood Street in Blue Island, was charged with retail theft.

FRIDAY, APRIL 22

Bag Ruse

Police were called about a retail theft at a department store in the Orland Square Mall around 8:15 p.m. Security said two men were seen taking items into a dressing room with a shopping bag that appeared thin, and left the room without the items but with a fuller looking bag. One of the men was carrying the bag and left the store, police said. The items are worth $148.20. Stravadjo Atikossi, 22, of the 8600 block of 86th Avenue in Justice, was charged with retail theft.

No-Pass Zone

Police were called to a two-vehicle accident in the 15500 block of Wolf Road around 6:15 a.m. The caller, who was driving one of the vehicles, told police he was driving north on Wolf Road when a truck tried to pass in a no-pass zone, police said. The truck hit the caller’s back taillight, and the truck then spun out and came to rest in a ditch on the west side of the road, according to the report. The driver of the truck was trying to get the truck out of the ditch when officers arrived, and police asked him to perform field sobriety tests, according to the report. The truck driver failed the tests, police said. Jamie S. Velasquez, 29, of the 19300 block of Wolf Road in Mokena, was charged with driving under the influence, improper passing, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving with a suspended license and driving an uninsured vehicle.

THURSDAY, APRIL 21

Purse Hide

Police were called about a retail theft at a department store in Orland Square Mall around 8 p.m. Security said a woman was seen taking three display items, putting them in her purse and leaving the store without paying. Aerial C. Balark, 18, of the 8800 Burley Avenue in Chicago, was cited with retail theft.

Tagged 

Police pulled over a vehicle for driving with a cracked windshield on 159th Street near 84th Avenue around 5:40 p.m. Officers found a shirt worth $22.99 with security tags still on it and no proof of purchase, as well as two pairs of underwear, also without proof of purchase, police said. Lasonia L. Trader, 32, of the 5900 block of South Emerald Avenue, and Shadaviea Coats, 20, of the 8500 block of South Justin Street in Chicago, each were cited with retail theft.

Purse Ruse

Police were called about a retail theft at a department store in Orland Square Mall around 12:10 p.m. Security said a woman was seen walking into a dressing room with numerous items and then leaving the room with only a few before leaving the store. Items were found in the woman’s purse, according to the report. Diana Dlouhy, 37, of the 8700 block of 80th Court in Hickory Hills, was charged with retail theft.

MONDAY, APRIL 18

Shirt Tuck

Police were called about a retail theft in a department store in Orland Square Mall around noon. Security said a man was seen putting four T-shirts under the sweatshirt he was wearing before leaving the store without paying. The shirts are worth a total of $80. The man gave officers a fake name, fake birth date and a fake address, police said. Robert J. Banks, 18, of the 17700 block of Princeton Lane in Country Club Hills, was charged with retail theft and obstructing a peace officer.  

Lane Change

Police were told about a traffic altercation that started at 159th Street and Ravinia Drive around 3:45 p.m. A man told police that while he was driving west on 159th past Ravinia, where the road becomes one lane, a pickup truck tried merging close to his car, forcing him into the eastbound lane. The man said the truck then slowed down and got behind him, and drove close to the rear of his car. When the two vehicles stopped at 159th and Wolf, a man got out of the truck, struck the other man’s window with his hand and spit, according to the report. The truck then continued to follow the man south on Wolf Road, before turning around and going the other way, police said. Scott A. Roth, 49, of 10700 block of Churchill Drive in Orland Park, was cited for assault.

Watch Grab

Police were called to Zumiez in Orland Square Mall about a retail theft around 7:30 p.m. A store staff member told police that employees were warned about people with keys to the watch cases using them to steal watches, and two men in the store matched the descriptions given, police said. The employee spoke with the men, when he noticed the watch case was missing its locks and several watches were missing, according to the report. One of the men gave up one watch worth about $400, and the two men took off running, according to the report.  One man was found after dropping parts of the case lock, but didn’t have the missing watches on him, police said. Michael T. Bouie, 23, of the 3300 block of Steve Road in Memphis, Tenn., was charged with criminal damage to property.

Police are still looking for the second man, who took three watches worth about $1,700 total. He was described as 20 to 30 years old, black, 5-foot-10 to 6 feet tall, weighing between 180 and 225 pounds with a stocky build. He was last seen wearing dark blue jeans, brown sneakers and a black hooded sweatshirt that was covered by a white hooded jacket with black writing on the left sleeve and dark clasps on the front, police said. He was also wearing a black puffy vest over the white jacket.

FRIDAY, APRIL 15

Missing Merchandise

Police were called about a retail theft at Orland Square Mall around 2:10 p.m. Security said a woman and a female juvenile were found with unpaid merchandise on them from stores in the mall. Robin D. Haywood, 21, of the 8000 block of South Francisco Street in Chicago, was cited with retail theft.

SUNDAY, APRIL 3

DUI

Officers pulled over an SUV after seeing it veer out of its lane and drive over the median strip near 108th Avenue and 165th Street around 3:30 a.m. The driver’s eyes appeared glassy and bloodshot and his breath smelled like alcohol, police said. The driver performed field sobriety tests and refused to provide a breath sample, according to the report. Peter J. Lotus, 35, of the 1900 block of Edmonds Drive in New Lenox, was charged with driving under the influence and improper lane use.
