Residents Escape House Before Garage Fire Spread

Flames reached an attached bedroom, but didn't go any further and overall a majority of the house was spared from heavy damage.

Orland firefighters took on a garage fire that spread to an adjacent bedroom Tuesday afternoon, but didn’t cause any injuries among residents or fire personnel.

The Orland Fire Protection District was called around 2:25 p.m. about a fire in the attached garage of a house in the 8100 block of Anne Drive, according to Orland Fire Chief Ken Brucki. Residents were home at the time, but with the help of neighbors, they got out of the house before anyone was injured, Brucki said.

A car was parked in the garage at the time, but a cause for the fire is still under investigation as of Tuesday night, Brucki said.

Firefighters were working both inside and outside the house to minimize damage, and the efforts meant they didn’t need to be pump water inside main areas of the house, Brucki said.

“Flames did reach a bedroom directly next to the garage, but the crews did a phenomenal job from stopping the fire from reaching the attic space,” Brucki said. “There is a little damage to the bedroom, but it would have been worse had it reached the attic.”

The fire was under control in about 20 minutes and fully out after about an hour, Brucki said.

Fire personnel had to physically remove the car and debris from the garage to put out all remaining spot fires, Brucki said.

“It’s important to highlight how hard the firemen work especially when it’s hot out,” Brucki said. “When we’re encapsulated, the work cycle gets reduced a little because you are so heated, but it’s still challenging. Overall, they did phenomenal job.”
