Shoplifter Accused of Damaging Pilfered Items: Blotter

MONDAY, MARCH 25

Alleged Thief Damages Items

Brittany N. Jeffries, 22, of the 200 block of Miami Street in Park Forest, was charged with retail theft and criminal damage to property, according to a report. She is accused of taking $481.62 worth of merchandise from Macy’s, 1 Orland Square Dr. A store employee said three of the allegedly stolen items were damaged and couldn’t be sold. Police also found that Jeffries was wanted on an outstanding Cook County warrant for driving with a suspended license. She was due in Bridgeview bond court on March 26.

Outstanding Warrant

John P. Newton, 24, of the 15600 block of Plum Tree Drive in Orland Park, was arrested on an outstanding Orland Park warrant for violating an order of protection, according to a report. An officer picked up Newton at about 3 p.m. from the Winnebago County jail.

DUI Charge For Tinley Park Driver

Brooke E. Werner, 22, of the 17700 block of Pheasant Drive in Tinley Park, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and improper lane use, according to a report. Police were called at about 3:10 a.m. for a possible drunken driver. An officer stopped the vehicle in the 9300 block of 143rd Street after seeing the tires cross the road lines. Werner reportedly had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. She took field sobriety tests and was arrested. Werner also allegedly refused to take a breath test. She is due in Bridgeview court on May 15.

Mokena Driver Hit With DUI Charge

Raegan M. Bania, 37, of the 19800 block of Center Street in Mokena, was charged with driving under the influence, DUI with a blood-alcohol level greater than 0.08, driving without insurance, improper right turn and improper lane use and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle, according to a report. Bania’s vehicle was stopped at about 12:34 a.m. near the 7300 block of Park Central Drive. Police allegedly had seen her speeding and swerve across road lines. She appeared to be masking the smell of alcohol on her breath by chewing gum and smoking a cigarette, according to the report. After performing field sobriety tests, Bania was told she failed and was arrested. She also took a breath test while in custody. Bania is due in Bridgeview court on May 7.

FRIDAY, MARCH 22

Marijuana Charge for Matteson Man

Tia M. Westbrook, 19, of the 12400 block of Michigan Avenue in Chicago was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding, disobeying a traffic control device and crossing the median, according to a report. Westbrook was stopped for travelling 60mph in a 45mph zone at about 3:16 a.m. near 18500 LaGrange Rd. Police reported smelling a strong odor of alcohol and a faint smell of burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle. Westbrook was arrested after performing field sobriety tests. Police were unable to get a sufficient sample for a breath test. She is due in Bridgeview court on May 7. A passenger in her car, Arnie J. Travis, 25, of the 800 block of Kostner Avenue in Matteson, was charged with possession of marijuana after searches of the vehicle and him turned up 15 bags of what tested positive for marijuana. He also was charged with allowing a drunk person to drive.
