South Suburban Drunken Driving Arrests, Dec. 11

Not one but two drivers are accused of almost driving into police squad cars in this edition of south suburban DUI arrests.

Nov. 24: Andrea Zagone, 31, of the 1100 block of Schilling Avenue, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after being stopped for pulling out in front of a fully marked police squad car on 14th Street, police said. The police officer slammed on his brakes to avoid crashing into Zagone's vehicle, according to the report. Zagone was pulled over by police, according to the report. Zagone then referred to herself as "half dago," then argued with the officer, stating "No, you were going to hit me, it wasn't my fault."

Nov. 24: Jesus Garcia-Rubio, 37, of the 18400 block of Western Avenue in Homewood, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after he was stopped for speeding on Halsted Street, according to the report. Asked if he had been drinking, Garcia-Rubio said he had five beers about two hours before driving, according to the report. A Breathalyzer test revealed Garcia-Rubio had a blood-alcohol content level of nearly three times the legal limit, police said. He was also charged with speeding and not having a valid driver's license.

Nov. 20: Joniqua M. Stinson, 22, of the 800 block of White Oak Lane in University Park, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after she was stopped on 14th Street for speeding and weaving into the oncoming traffic lane, according to the report. Asked if she had been drinking, Stinson said no, but changed her answer to "one beer" when she was asked to step out of her car, police said. Stinson attempted a Breathalyzer test eight times before finally registering a blood-alcohol content level of .157, according to the report.

Nov. 19: Nadine B. Robinson, 53, of the 2600 block of Marigold Drive in Sauk Village was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after police stopped her for disobeying a stop sign and not using a signal to turn, according to the report. Asked if she had been drinking, Robinson told police she had been drinking beer all night but that she did not know how many beers. Police then saw an open bottle of Seagram's Apple Vodka half full on the floor by Robinson's feet, according to the report. She was taken into custody with a blood-alcohol content level of .116.

Nov. 26: Maurice Arrington, 33, of the 15700 block of Saint Louis Avenue in Markham, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police said they stopped Arrington’s car in the 18000 block of Halsted Street at 8:35 p.m. for driving 47 in a 35 mph zone. He appeared “dazed/confused” with bloodshot eyes and gave a fake name and age, police said. Officers found a smoking bowl with residual marijuana in his car, according to the report. He allegedly failed field sobriety tests, though he refused a breath and urine test. He was also charged with speeding, obstructing identification, failure to provide insurance and no valid driver’s license.

Nov. 22: Jeffrey Colin, 24, of the 3000 block of Hickory Road in Homewood, was charged with driving under the influence. Police said they stopped Colin’s car near Gottschalk Avenue and Ridge Road at 1:18 a.m. for driving on the wrong side of the road. He was arrested after failing field sobriety tests and a Breathalyzer test, according to the report.

Nov. 25: Jill C. Ording, 29, of the 15900 block of 143rd Street in Homer Glen, was charged with driving under the influence, failure to signal and improper lane usage. After investigating a domestic disturbance at White Castle involving alcohol, officers advised Ording to arrange for another way home. According to police, she got in her car anyway, around 3:30 a.m., making a wide left turn onto LaGrange Road and swerving for several blocks. When asked why she disobeyed officers, police said, Ording responded, “What else was I supposed to do?" She was arrested after failing field sobriety tests and later submitted to a Breathalyzer exam, blowing above the legal limit, police said.

Dec. 2: Police pulled over an SUV after it almost sideswiped a squad car, then drove up onto a curb before cutting into the wrong side of the street on 157th Street near Lake Hills Court. Police smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath and found several beer bottles, as well as one tallboy can, on the passenger side floor, according to the report. The driver failed field sobriety tests, police said. Christian O. Cordero, 19, of the 15800 block of Orlan Brooke Drive in Orland Park, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a suspended license, improper lane use and driving on the wrong side of the road.

Nov. 26: Police pulled over a vehicle for speeding in the 14400 block of Jefferson Avenue around 12:40 a.m. The officer smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath and noticed the driver appeared to be sleepy, according to the report. The driver failed field sobriety tests, police said. Daniel J. Bixman, 38, of the 14400 block of Jefferson Avenue in Orland Park, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding and failure to notify the Secretary of State’s Office of an address change.

Nov. 27: Jacek Stopka, 40, of the 6800 block of Forestview Drive in Oak Forest, was charged with drunken driving. He was stopped at 2:57 a.m. in the 13600 block of Harlem Avenue and failed all field sobriety tests, police said.

Nov. 26: Victoria Zbonski, 21, of the 12400 block of 70th Avenue, was charged with drunken driving and leaving the scene of an accident. At 3:20 a.m. Zbonski hit a vehicle in the 12400 block of 70th Avenue and continued driving, police said. She was located about a block away from the scene and subsequently failed field sobriety tests, police said.

Nov. 26: Sergio Gonzalez, 25, of the 7900 block of McVicker in Burbank, was charged with drunken driving. Gonzalez was stopped for speeding in the 11100 block of Southwest Highway at 2 a.m., police said. He failed field sobriety tests, police said.

Nov. 26: Kyle Rarrat, 21, of the 6800 block of Hickory Street in Tinley Park, was charged with drunken driving and driving without insurance. He was stopped at 12:31 a.m. in the 11100 block of Southwest Highway and failed field sobriety tests, police said. 

Driving Under the Influence of Drugs, Nov. 19: Robert Twitchell, of Harnew Road in Oak Lawn, was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, no proof of insurance and improper lane use. He was stopped at 2:02 a.m. after he almost struck a road barricade in the 13000 block of Harlem Avenue, police said. He was given field sobriety tests and failed, police said. He was found to have less than 2.5 grams of marijuana, police said.

Nov. 16: Shawn Jones, 21, of the 14600 block of 82nd Avenue in Orland Park, was charged with drunken driving, transporting open alcohol and failure to wear a seatbelt. Jones was stopped at a seatbelt checkpoint and officers detected a smell of alcohol, police said. He failed both a field sobriety test and a breath test, police said. An open container of liquor was found inside the car, police said.

Dec. 3: Sule Marek, 22, of Orland Park, was charged with drunken driving, illegal transportation of liquor and driving without insurance. Marek was seen speeding down Harlem Avenue at 2 a.m and drove for several blocks and made several turns before pulling over, police said. He failed a field sobriety test, police said.

Police Charge Plainfield Woman 'Lost in Tinley' With DUI: arrested a Plainfield woman early Sunday, Dec. 4, saying she was "swerving all over the road" near the Oak Park Avenue Metra station. When an officer approached the car around 1:30 a.m., driver Katharine A. Mrugala, 30, told them she was lost. "Her boyfriend, the passenger … was supposed to give her directions, but he was extremely intoxicated and no help," the report said. Police told Mrugala that just because she's lost doesn't mean she could drive in the other lane of traffic, according to the report. Read more on Tinley Park Patch.

Nov. 30: Michael T. Casper, 36, of the 8700 block of West 170th Street in Tinley Park, was arrested around 11:40 p.m. near the intersection of 171st Street and Oak Park Avenue, where he was charged with driving under the influence and improper lane use. Police pulled over Casper after they saw him drifting across lane lines, they said. Casper told them he'd dropped his phone and was reaching over to pick it up. After police smelled alcohol on his breath, they asked him to perform field sobriety tests, the report said. He failed the tests and was taken to the station, police said, where he refused to take the Breathalyzer test, saying, "We both know I wouldn't pass it," the report said.
