Station 2 Repairs Moving Forward, Orland Fire Officers Chosen

The Orland Fire Protection District board agreed to start accepting bids for renovations to Station 2, which Chief Ken Brucki said has been repurposed too many times.

The Orland Fire Protection District is looking for contracting bids for repair work for a fire station that was built in 1980.

The district board of trustees, including recently installed John Brudnak and Jayne Schirmacher, voted at the May 28 meeting to start accepting bids for work at the station located at 15100 S. 80th Ave.

Orland Fire Chief Ken Brucki said that the district’s buildings have a “life expectancy” between 15 and 20 years, and Station 2 was built in 1980. Problems with plumbing and mold found in the station are among the issues, but also how the station has been used contributed to its current state, Brucki said. The station has been operated with three different configurations, with retrofitting done to accommodate each of the three plans, according to Brucki.

“There are many indications that surfaces were thieved for other services,” Brucki said during the meeting. “The crossover has led to mechanical and maintenance issues.”

All trustees in attendance voted in favor of accepting proposals for the station’s renovation. Trustee Blair Rhode did not attend the meeting.

Officers were also selected during the May 28 meeting. Board president Jim Hickey will remain as president for the next two years, and trustee Chris Evoy will remain as treasurer. Schirmacher was chosen to take the secretary role, which was formerly Rhode’s, and Brudnak will serve as president if Hickey is absent.
