Tahoe Swiped From Service Department

A 2010 Chevy Tahoe was reported stolen from the Webb Chevrolet service department.

A 2010 Chevy Tahoe that was being serviced at Webb Chevrolet, 9440 S. Cicero Ave., was reported stolen by the service department after its owner came to pick up his car around 5:06 p.m. Aug. 23.

Police said that an employee parked the car in the parking lot after it had been serviced and placed the vehicle’s keys on the service office counter.

When the owner came for his car, both it and the keys were missing, reports said.

Police reviewed security video, which showed a male black hanging around the service department when the Tahoe was brought in. The video showed the man entering the office where the keys were left and walk out a short time later. The man was then seen on camera in the parking lot getting into the Tahoe and driving off.

A gray Dodge Ram also backed into the service lot. As the Dodge Ram passed the Tahoe, the man nodded and waved at the truck. The Dodge Ram turned around and block the entrance to the service lot.

Employees told police that the Dodge Ram was never brought into the service department and left after the Tahoe exited the lot.

The owner was provided with a rental car and Webb said it would reimburse the owner for the loss of the Tahoe.

I am interested in the comment that Webb was going to reimburse the owner for the loss of the Tahoe. Welllllll........ I had a car stolen out of a dealership 30 years ago. The car was towed in (lost all coolant after being serviced the day before) and dropped off right next to the Service Desk on a Friday and Monday it was gone. Bottom line. Dealership had no liability to me. I had to file a claim with my insurance (and they may have gone after the dealer). Car was gone 3 months while we argued with the insurance co regarding the value. Then the car was found at Ford City with a flat tire and tons of engine and body damage. There is more to this horrible story but I won't go into it . My advice to the owner of the car-settle with your insurance company as soon as the waiting period is over. Don't listen to any other promises. Anyone in insurance who can elaborate further on the dealers liability. I must comment that it is nice of Webb to give them a rental car--I did not get that consideration and also my understanding is the dealer is not obligated to do that. Please keep us updated on how this turns out.

In today's consumer climate, taking a big hit like that lost Tahoe is bad, but not as bad as if this story ended with the dealer saying they would NOT replace the vehicle, or as good, obviously, as the goodwill now engendered toward them if they DO replace the Tahoe (which is NOT a cheap vehicle, even used...). It is a write-off, if nothing else, and good business as well...good for them (if they go through with it).

Very good point, rob. Why in the world wouldn't the police put a gps locator on their own vehicles?
