Athlete of the Week: Sandburg's Wojtowicz Knows When to Make the Sacrifice

LIzzi Wojtowicz does whatever it takes to help the Eagles' softball team to victory.

The No. 2 hitter in a batting order often is an unsung hero. When the  leadoff hitter reaches base, the No. 2 hitter might be called upon to move the runner over, giving up some glory for the good of the team.

Sandburg’s Lizzi Wojtowicz was in that second spot in Jim Fabianski's order on Monday. After leadoff hitter Candice Koch walked to start both the first and third innings, Wojtowicz laid down sacrifice bunts in both at-bats.

In the first instance, some heads-up baserunning allowed Koch to go all the way to third and eventually score after the successful bunt, helping the Eagles on their way to against Lincoln-Way East.

In Sandburg’s 3-2 win over Glenbard South on Friday, Wojtowicz did more than bunt. Her two-run double in the seventh lifted Sandburg to the victory.

For her contributions to her team, Wojtowicz is recognized as Patch’s Athlete of the Week.
